On snowy nights Mind fogged by cold Combined with fireplace heat As reflection turns To friends lost Carried down time streams Shadows of remorse Not liking this losing people Creating fanatical turns of fate To keep track of folks Wrapped into this obsession Of holding onto what has yet to be gone With thoughts Of contact and touch Individuals far and wide Not lost in translucent fog And smile magically appears But there is sadness for those No longer found Some passed on In wars of life A neighbor dying of drugs He himself overdosed A relative that assumed The age of mortality And went on to Next lifetime without Benefit of proper goodbyes or hugs This grief bears down malignancy Like stories told of those Who lost a limb An arm or a leg And can still feel it itch Or throb So it is with de facto friend loss With such clear thoughts And feelings Of this passed on friend So with poise and comfort Moved to talk with them But they are no longer there Except in mind or heart What to think at these moments Like old folks clipping obituaries like coupons Impolitely read Just to see whom they have Beaten to the punch The task remains Maintaining contact With folks Discovering anew How to keep Friendships fresh And un-dissolved Computer address books Printed out into stacks for Fear of computer crashing And losing everyone
