Taming Sophie (Continued)

Chapter 7

Sophie returned from the bathroom, she felt clean again. The table was neatly set for two, she was so hungry. The stranger was busy at the cooker, Sophie slid into the chair and waited quietly. She tucked the dressing gown tightly around her legs, and sat patiently.

‘Bye the way, my name is Andy. Andy Simmons.’

‘I’m Sophie.’

Andy turned round holding the pot of scrambled eggs in one hand and a spoon in the other. He filled both plates and put the empty pot in the sink. He carefully placed a full pot of tea on the table and fetched some milk from the fridge.

‘You didn’t have to go to all this trouble, thank you.’

Sophie began to eat, she could feel Andy’s eyes looking at her, searching for clues, but he didn’t ask anything. She hoped that he wouldn’t ask her the circumstance that had brought her to the barn, she didn’t want to lie to him anymore, she wanted to tell him the truth. She wanted him to see that she was innocent, she wanted him to say it was okay. She should have been with someone like Andy, nice and ordinary. His wife probably never realised how lucky she was. Which reminded her, where was she? Who was she? Where was the child who played on the swing? Perhaps he had been touched by the same luck as Sophie. Maybe he was divorced, she had gone and taken his child with her, he was alone.

‘So, is your wife at work?’ Sophie felt cheeky, she had no right to ask, but she hated the silence.

‘No, she’s in London at the moment, visiting her sister. Her sister has just had a baby, Laura, my wife has gone to see them both. A little boy, Jamie, he must be almost a week old now. This is Marie’s first child. Do you have any children?’

‘No, not yet. Maybe one day.’

‘We have a little girl, Jade, she’s 6. She has gone too.’

Sophie was enjoying the chat, his laid back approach to life had restored her faith in human kindness, the way he talked about his family made her wish she was part of his world. Life seemed so normal compared to what she had left behind her. It was great to realise that not everyone had to endure the hardship of crime and blame and misfortune. She felt comfort in knowing that despite her arrival and the lies, he seemed the forgiving type.

‘So, what brings a young girl like you to a place like this? And, why did you lie about the car?’

‘I’m sorry, but I’d rather not talk about it. Let’s just say, I need to get home, quickly.’

Andy gazed at her, she felt better now, she had made it clear that she wasn’t going to tell him.

‘Where is home?’

‘Glasgow, I was telling the truth about that part. I need to get to Glasgow.’

‘Have you any money?’

‘No, bad planning.’

‘You left in a rush then. Sorry, I’m not asking.’

‘Yes, something like that.’

‘I can lend you some money to get you home, if that would help.’

‘You would do that for me? I’m a stranger, you don’t even know me.’

‘I’m sure I could get to know you.’

He reached for Sophie’s hand, his eyes fixed into hers. Sophie could remember the same look in the driver’s eyes, in Hammond’s eyes. She got up from the table and headed for the bathroom, she was starting to feel a sense of danger. She had outstayed her welcome and it was time to move on. She would go to the bathroom, get dressed, thank Andy for his hospitality and leave without his money.

Sophie felt his hand around her mouth, she was being pulled back, her legs couldn’t take the pressure of his weight pulling at her, they gave as he threw her onto the kitchen floor. She kicked and tried to scream, his full weight lying on top of her, his breath all over her face. Panic followed, she grabbed his hair and pulled it, she lifted her knees to kick. Andy laughed and grabbed both of her hands, leaving her mouth free. Sophie gasped for some air, and screamed, he switched one of Sophie’s hands to join the other and held them down. His face pressed against hers, as he covered her mouth with his, her screams muffled inside his mouth, she could feel him moving as he undid his trousers. Sophie kicked again, she had to get free, this couldn’t happen to her, not now, not ever. No matter how hard she tried to stop him, he forced her legs apart with his legs and she could feel the pain of him inside her. He thrust again and again. No matter how desperately she kicked and wriggled, it seemed to give him more pleasure. His breath grew heavier and noisier, Sophie’s grew shallow and few, his hand was now covering her nose too and she could hardly breath. The reality of the situation left her numb and confused. She lay still on the floor. He had finished with her, he got up and stared at the silent heap on the floor. He nudged her, she didn’t move. Her face was white, her lips were pale. He ran to the sink and filled a cup with water, and he threw it down on her face. He watched with relief as she coughed and moaned. She turned onto her side and opened her eyes. She could see two feet standing in front of her, she came to and tried to stand. Andy knelt down and helped her to her feet.

‘There now, that wasn’t so bad was it?’

Sophie could feel nothing but pain, every bone in her body was sore, her legs were weak and her head hurt more than it had done when Clive had hit her.

‘Now, why don’t you be a good girl , and go and get dressed and I’ll take you to the station. You’ll be home before you know it.’

Sophie was on auto pilot, she was moving her legs and she could feel Andy’s hand holding her arm. She was walking, she was picking up her clothes. Andy was helping her dress, first her jeans, then her T-shirt and finally her sweater. He dressed her feet in socks and placed them

into her shoes. She could do nothing for herself, she was like a child. He took a brush and carefully and slowly he brushed her long hair. Sophie was aware of his presence, but she felt unable to move, she felt hypnotised, she didn’t feel afraid, she had no emotion. She was being led towards a car. Andy placed her in the passenger seat of his land rover and started the engine.
