A powerful happening... [1,600 words] |
READERS'
REVIEWS
"Powerful writing to describe a powerful
happening. It made me want to keep reading. Well done." -- Robyn Jenkins, Canberra,
Australian Capital Territory, Australia
"I like the
mysterious slant on the beginning paragraphs and the heart warming ending, although the
piece needs a bit of clarity. For instance, the character was strapped, probed and in a
lot of uneccessary pain, I got the impression she was either being dissected by aliens or
suffering horribly in a concentration camp, which threw me way off the idea that she
actually had a baby (besides, couldn't she have taken something for the pain? A ceasarian
birth didn't even cross my mind). You do score a good point for not being predictable. All
in all, I enjoyed your story. Keep up the good work!" -- Joan |

Billy |

DESCRIPTION
Billy is a short story about a man who kills himself. [2,000
words] |
READERS'
REVIEWS
"This story was totally
unbelievable. A short story should never try to encompass someone's entire life.
That's why they are called "short stories"." -- Jane
""This is what
my world is all about . . . Do you understand?" Sorry, I don't . . .
stiff, clinical, lifeless writing. Don't give up the day job." -- J
Press
"1. no story should
need an epologe. good writers get their point across without having to explain their
motive. 2. why would an old man traumatize his grandson the way he was traumatized by his
grandfather by blowing the back of his head off in the same house for no apparent reason.
3. these stories that were supposed to "keep Billy alive forever" would never be
told because any time anyone would think of him the story of how he killed himself would
be the way he was remembered 4. Billy not only contradicts the very advice he gives to his
grandson to "always fight it out and never give up" by blowing the back of his
head off with a shotgun for no apparent reason as an old man with an entire family to set
an example for and who looked up to him, but he has no reason to cut his life short. those
who are peaceful and are finally towards the end of their lives enjoy this tranquility and
do not blow the back of their heads off in front of their families for no apparent
reason...EVER. 5. And lastly, wouldn't an elderly person who valued each day to be their
last want to be there for their grandchildren as long as possible. how poorly thought out
on the part of the author and disturbingly pointless!!" -- Bobby, USA |
