World Cubanization--Afghanization
Randall Barfield

September 11 has become an infamous historical date that we and our progeny will remember just as easily as we committed to memory December 7, November 22, July 4 and others. There will also be events, trends and tendencies that will be referred to as having existed before September 11, 2001 or having come after.

Where is this guy going? you say. Okay, I'm trying to get there. What I want to say is, I feel sorry for the poor person. Indeed, I'm poor materially myself. I just happen to be filty rich culturally, academically, spiritually and so on(in my eyes), although it would not even be difficult to challenge this assertion when and if done by the right snob.

Again, I feel sorry for the poor woman, man and child any place in the world. I could have easily been a victim myself. The reason I was not and, to date, have not been is due to several factors. One is that I am from the USA and have partaken of its benevolence, high degree of organization, resources, etc. Another is that my parents worked hard(both) to provide as much as possible for their five offspring(Thank you God and parents). Even another is that I had no discernible mental retardation and, to boot, could even read passably(Thank you again, God). Lastly, I work hard, too, and have been fortunate enough to enjoy continued employment for thirty years. So, even though I cannot alone do much about world poverty, I'm quick to donate a little at every request(I HOPE this is true, anyway.).

To continue, I'd like to point out that Jesus Himself said in John 12:7-8 the poor will always be with us. The Catholic Church did not invent this saying, as many people believe. Jesus said this for a reason. He was taking into account human nature. Most of us have heard someone say if 100 people were given 100 dollars simultaneously(or any other currency), in a few days' time some would have absolutely not a cent left and some would have already accumulated 1000 dollars, both situations due to any number of factors but not excluding stupidity, astuteness, greed, generosity, chance, acts of God and others. The theory reflects our true inequality as humans vis-a-vis mentalities, intelligence, talent, laboriousness and again, greed and generosity.

When we speak on a Utopian plane, it is easy to ignore or trivialize this theory. Of course, Jesus also spoke at length about AIDING the poor. For a "how about that!" comment, Abraham Lincoln said God must be partial and/or like the poor since there were so many of them in the world! He died over 100 and 35 years ago, right?

So, why do I say what I do in the title of this essay? I say it because if the 20 to 30 rich countries FALL somehow or for some reason, nobody will have anything, so to speak. The world will be sort of like Cuba, where everybody has nothing materially. This is speaking 42 years after the middle and upper classes fled the beautiful island. The reasons the world will be like Cuba might be many, but the main one is that there just aren't enough riches/resources to go around or if there are, a lot of them are still in the ground!

Six billion people are a lot of mouths to feed and bodies to provide care for. And this 6 billion will in no time be 7,8,9, etc. I know I paint a bleak picture here and I'm sorry. There is some consolation, however, in that some discoveries and inventions might be made which will lessen the situation of poverty considerably and these could and should especially occur in the critical areas of food and shelter. Let us hope, but it still is a "might" at the present time.

So, we find that if we need to choose a position as regards how the world will "exist," the choice must be based on, again, many factors. Some of these factors include one's current financial position, priorities of every type, concern for others and so on. I, for just one(remember little winemaker me?), can live without Cadillacs and such cars, sumptuous homes, kilometers of acreage and other such possessions, but I would be devastated and would surely succumb earlier if I had to give up books, the internet, music, art, movies, bistros, certain food and drink, and, in general, the FREEDOM of EXPRESSION these cultural elements reveal, exhibit and foster.

Maybe I've said enough. I hope I make my point here. If you've read this far, thanks reader. I hate long speeches, essays or meetings passionately! Ciao.
