Its utterly hard to be convinced that reciprocating the call of Himalayas is hereditary in our family. Something must be in our gene. You may call it gene factor.. I call it hygiene factor. Somehow, none of us could resist the call of Himalayas . The mountain range lying there. My grandpa , my dad , now me. all have one thing in common - we all wore mountaineers outfit and carried ice axe to reach the peak called Mount Everest And reaching there , personally I found the pick of my life. Amazing feelings. I realize that one day , my son will also be no exception to this gene factor , we are all blessed of. Ralph Watson is highly emotional before the good crowd of 200 odds in his felicitation ceremony organised by Adventurers Club at the John Hunters auditorium of Iowa.

Please tell us all about this - a long but memorable expedition to the top of the world . one young enthusiast in the age group of twenties puts up the question.

Ralph has been glad to express about all with equal passion. In his speech, starting point of this journey is Rudra Prayag ( at 14000 ft. up from the sea level ), which has motorable road upto this point ,beyond which , trekking is only option up to 18000 ft. Thereafter, mountaineering or climbing remains the only option till he reaches highest peak called Mt. Everest at 28000 ft., where every climber has to discover the truth man is loner.

Smilingly he starts to get into the subject of his passion, Thats a long story of a journey not frequented by miles but meters and feet , not by ease and comfort but toughness and solitude of life and death. Then he goes on.. with a stick pointing on a map hanging on the wall.

He speaks of the locale and the local people, the frost bites and avalanche, maverick nature and magnanimity of monasteries . He has had a special mention of an barebodied Indian saint ,who at the height of 18000 ft. maintains an Ashrama ( Shelter ) and during chilly nights, has regularly been feeding pilgrims and mountaineers hot bread and vegetable curry free of cost and providing free blankets for comfortable sleep. He guards the guests with his men. What a height of benevolence at that height !!!

The pin drop silence in the hall confirms that the audience is spell bound like never before. Ralphs passionate description to American crowd is naturally very specific and focussed it is all about climbing that ten to twelve thousand feet , which makes the time ticking away in wonder. The audience is then up on the rocks.

Excuse me, Sir ! How to reach to the Himalayan valley from our Minnesota or Colorado or Iowa ? A young boy asks.
By flight and cars , of course ! It takes roundabout a week to reach Himalayas via Nepal or India. By the way, why ? why are you asking this question, son ? Ralph replies with a counter question

Because, I am thinking of a time, when such an expedition must have to start from Minnesota, Colorado or Iowa itself. When all oil wells will be dry , what will happen ? You must also agree that peoples urge to go for adventure and discover new things can never be dried up. Thats a never ending process.

The old and veteran mountaineer like Ralph is knocked down like never before as if that question appears to be an wounded yeti with huge mouth to chew him up and suck the joy of adventure that flows in the veins of man for ages.

He catches hold of the corner of the table , controls the emotion , sharpens his sense of tackling the awful situation and comes up nervously with the comment , If so, son ! that will be a impossible world to live in as so many miles will lie before us to go to Himalayas.

So many miles He shrugged hastily and puts his hat down.

"Unique topic..... excellent characters. Waiting for your next writing. I like it. " -- Amitava Dutta, New Delhi, India.
"Bravo! A very thought provoking story. I liked it. The story makes one think that sometimes innocence makes one think more logically than experience. The narrrator revels in the past but the young boy stands for the future. " -- Amit Shankar Saha, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
