What I Learned as a Kid

I started this learning experience when I was only five years old and never thought it would be my most meaningful education experience. I went to a private Catholic school until the 8th grade; it was the most meaningful and worst educational experience in one. I had experiences that taught me about people when I was just a kid. I remember them like they happened yesterday and would not want to experience them again. My Mom went to a public school but for some reason she thought my education would be better at a private school. Was she wrong. I not only learned I could get the same education somewhere else but I could have been treated better at the same time.
We always were given tons of homework and had at least two tests a day, even in elementary school. I can remember staying up really late as a child and having to study for tests not only in history, math and Spanish but also Religion. We had so much busy work in every class. I remember my friends that went to public school would be outside playing and I would be doing homework. Would I be so much smarter than those kids? No, I would not. The teachers in private schools do not have to be certified. Teachers in public schools are state certified, which means they have gone through the training
required by the state, some private school teachers may not be required to have certifications.
I remember getting ready for school in the morning and having to put on a uniform. I always wanted to wear normal clothes like other kids. Once a week we would get dress down day and not have to wear our uniform. I remember my Mom dropping me off at school one day and seeing everyone in the front of school out of their uniform but I had mine on. I did not want to get out of the car so my Mom took me home and let me change into normal clothes. I got to school late and my Mom walked me to class. I remember the teacher yelling at me in front of the class when I told her I was late because I went home to change. Why did you go home to change? Why did your Mom take you home to change? She yelled and acted like I had just committed a sin. Why was it her business if I wanted to have a dress down day like all the other kids? What was she trying to teach me by yelling at me in front of the class? I remember thinking this sure wasnt a Christian attitude that they kept testing us on.
Going to a smaller school is not always an advantage. When you have the same teachers over the years you can get labeled from the start. If you were not a kid who wanted to study all the time and get good grades you were labeled as a problem. I remember in elementary school just wanting to hang out and not have to study all of the time. Whenever something happened at school there was a group of us that were blamed. Most of the time we had nothing to do with the situation but because we did act how they thought we should we were questioned. This is my most educational experience because it changed the way I think about school and people. Not all kids learn the same and have the same interests, it seemed like that is how they wanted us to be, the same. I finally decided I did not want to go to private school anymore and it was the best decision for me.
