Prologue
An elderly she bear's eyes widened as dogs of all shades and sizes poured through the entrance. A large brown male leapt onto her. She wheezed as she toppled over. The brown dog snarled angrily at her. "Graciana, remember me? The helpless little pup who you attacked so long ago?" Graciana gasped almost inaudibly. "Tree?" Tree nodded curtly. "Yes. And you will be our petty little prisoner. Like that?" Tree cuffed Graciana sharply over the head, then turned to a tan dog and a black and golden she dog. "Take her away!" The dogs dragged her body out of the clearing. Graciana sighed sorrowfully, thinking sad thoughts as she was hauled into a small den. "Uniuk, I failed you."
Chapter 1
Kiinaq sank deeper and deeper as he and Mud descended into the depths of the ocean. He froze as he made out a dark shape in the frothy water. "Orca!" He gurgled. He began swimming upward, kicking his hindlegs. The killer whale was on his tail, swimming and twisting through the water faster than any bear could swim. Kiinaq's massive reddish white paws groped for the edge of the hole. The orca grabbed his long tail. Kiinaq's eyes bulged in the pain. "Help!" He growled, gritting his teeth. Auq dug his teeth into Kiinaq's loose scruff. They were slowly dragged away, but before Auq's claws could slip something tan and black bumped into the orca. The killer whale dropped his firm grip and gaped his mouth in pain. "Mud!" Kiinaq thought as he was heaved out of the icy, cold salty water. The brown dog's eyes softened as he sank from sight.
Chapter 2
"Mud!" Tree scurried to the hole, panting and gasping. He stared blankly for a second, then Kiinaq sighed. "It is your time, Tree." Kiinaq shoved Tree into the cracked ice as the oak colored dog whipped around to face him. "No!" Tree's eyes widened in shock, then narrowed in anger, then closed in pain as it laced him when he hit the water and when the ice scraped his spine. The dogs exchanged horrified glances, then gave howls of grief. "Tree is gone!" "Mud was his successor!" "Dogs we must scat!" More and more shouts made less and less sense as the dogs let out volleys of remorseful yelps. They leapt out of the camp and were gone.
Chapter 3
"Uniuk..." A voice rasped from within a snow den. "Graciana!" Uniuk ran into the frosted cave. Graciana was lying in the den. Cobwebs clung to her tangled fur and her russet, violet eyes were glazed with heartbreak, but joy as well. She rumbled happily as Uniuk entered. "Uniuk... It is my turn to join--" She sputtered, and Uniuk took his golden chance. "Never! I won't let it happen!" Graciana blinked happily one last time. "Take care of our cubs..." Her voice melted away as she closed her eyes, never to open them again. Kiinaq felt shaken. First Sivulliq, then Mud, now Graciana! How much more grief could he take?
Chapter 4
Uniuk collapsed. "No... No, no, no!" He leapt to his paws and dashed out of the den. He ran to the cracked ice and dove in. "No!" Auq sprang in after him. Sila rushed forward. "Come back, Uniuk!" Kiinaq sighed. "We lost more..." Sila shoved her muzzle into his face. "I won't believe it! We wait until sunhigh, then decide." So the bears sat down and waited. The sun rose to its peak, but Sila refused to give in. "Moonrise." Eventually moonrise came and went, and by then bears were already swallowing chunks of fatty flesh. "Sila, face it. They're gone." Kiinaq pleaded gently, but stayed firm. Sila shook her head. "Fine." She snapped. She launched herself into a den and curled up into a tight but comfortable ball. Kiinaq closed his eyes. He heard Iji once more. "They are waiting..."
Chapter 5
Kiinaq awoke to rushing water. Stumbling sleepily out of his den, he gasped at the sight. Water was cascading through the camp. It leaked out the crack in the ice and flowed down the slope. Kiinaq roared deafeningly. "Flash flood!" Bears roused and bellowed in fear and anxiety. Kiinaq kinked his tail over his back and then led his bears through the flood. Once they made it out, he counted attendance. A cry of worry sprang from the assembled crowd. "Where's Tonrar?" Kiinaq didn't think as he lumbered blindly into the flood. "Kiinaq!"Imiq called, but he didn't turn back. He was going to find Tonrar.
