Vinrye Part 4 Taya Sommel
After being in classes for almost a month, the whispers and stares didn't stop.
There was one day where I'd had enough and I said,"What?! Does it please you to whisper about me everyday?
I'm sick of feeling like I am an object to be gawked at. If you have something to say,
just fucking say it and stop being pussies!" I heard a collective gasp and the whispering stop for just a moment.
I didn't care, I was extremely pissed off and was tired of the snobs at Kestyn. I just wanted it to end.
The guy that had stared at me when I had first walked into the class now had a WereTiger girl sitting with him,
her long black and white tail slowly drawing a figure eight pattern over and over again. Her black hair was cropped
and dazzled with silver streaks that were symmetrically placed through her hair. I couldn't tell if it was natural,
but I had no doubts about the ears and tail. Her eyes were naturally very narrow, giving her a menacing look. Her pupils
didn't help as they were only narrow vertical slits. The guy was neatly dressed as normal, his completely silver hair pulled
back into a long braid. His eyes were almost black as hers were a dark violet. She gestured to an open seat next to hers and
spoke with a heavily Russian accent, "My name is Zherley, and this is Sephir. We are here to recruit you into our fight against
the evil ones, the rogue Otherbeings that defy the laws and boundaries set by the High Council of Isperalda. Would you join our
cause and fight for people whom you were once like? Or will you let them suffer and die while you remain safe in the shadows of
Kestyn?" She gave me an intense and intimidating look, and I had to admit that she was very convincing. I was already thinking
of saying yes, and the reassurance that Draegon would approve of this kind action made me even more sure of my decision. I turned
to Zherley with what I hoped was fierce determination, "Where do I sign up?" I asked her, and she and Sephir both beamed.
"Ouch! That really stings!" I cried as Zherley was tattooing the symbol of the Underground onto my right hip diagonal from my belly
button where it wouldn't be seen unless someone raised my shirt. It didn't take her long to finish and I examined it in the mirror.
It appeared to be a crude heart with a stake through it. I kind of liked it. "It's an enchanted tattoo." Sephir explained," If an
evil one touches it, they will be burned. Also if you are hurt or kidnapped it will lead us to you. It can't be removed, you are part
of the Underground permanently." I nodded and hugged my new brother and sister. I went to rest of my classes feeling lighter, and I knew
in my heart that joining the Underground was right, and it made me feel like I belonged. It made me feel like I had a family again.
Draegon burst into my room later that day while I was doing homework. He strode over to me and jerked my chair to face him, "What is
this I hear about you joining the Underground? Do you know what you're getting yourself into? They are dangerous thugs, Vinrye! Please
don't tell me you've been tattooed, then there is no way for you to get out!" When I didn't say anything he became even more furious,
"You have one don't you? Where is it? Tell me where it is Vinrye!" He screamed at me. I shook with fear, I had never seen this side to
Draegon before. In the back of my mind a voice said 'What other sides of Draegon don't you know Vinrye? So far this is the only one besides
nice that you've seen. Did you really think that he couldn't ever hurt you? Anyone can you silly girl.' He was still yelling and I realized
I was shrinking back into my chair. This isn't like you Vinrye, fight back. He was right in my face now, demanding where the tattoo was. 'Fight
Back! Vinrye you coward, fight him back!' "That's enough!" I screamed, though to him or the voice I'm not sure which. I thrust my shirt upwards,
then pointed to the tattoo, "There it is! Are you satisfied? Here why don't you touch it too?!" I slapped his palm against my tattoo for a moment
then pushed it away. All the anger had left his face and was replaced by pure shock, then respect. There were other things in his expression when
he yanked me to him and held me; one was what seemed to be affection, and the other I would not understand for a very long time. He bent down and
kissed me roughly on the mouth, and my thoughts left me as a daze came over me. One arm was around my waist, and the other was behind his back hand
open to a burn shaped like a heart with a stake through it.
