TITLE (EDIT)
Victims
DESCRIPTION
A satirical poem that tells it like it is. The poem confronts a disturbing trend in our society - transferring blame to others instead of placing it squarely where it belongs.

Victims
Richard Koss

There was a time
we cast our fate
and how and why
we got there
was determined
by us alone.
It was nice
to get help
along the way
though we never
demanded or expected it.
Envy,
while not uncommon,
was never reason
to take a share of spoils
from someone elses toil.
To those who made it, good for you,
we hoped to get there someday too.

It was another time,
a different era,
before the coming
of the victims.
Now we see them
everywhere.
They might be you
or even me.
And if youre not one yet,
its really easy
to become one.
Just pick out
someone else to blame
for anything you did
or didnt do.
Then in misery, as youre wallowing,
youll be joined by quite a following.

If youre not tall, handsome or pretty
you have a right to more than pity.
Its not your fault youre like a clown
Its your damn parents who let you down.

So what if we flunked out of school
its no shame, and were still cool.
You want to show how much you care?
Get rid of tests, theyre so unfair.

Being hooked on weed or crack,
is really not as bad as smack.
All they do is bitch and moan.
Let them give us methadone.

We too, were hooked by slick Joe Camel,
got blackened lungs, lost tooth enamel.
Those warning signs were tough to read.
Now lawyers have our case to plead.

For single moms its tough to make it
on ADC, but well still take it.
You see, we still know where its at.
Just keep on voting Democrat.

Harmed and hurt along the way.
Treated like dirt and led astray.
Victims - thats us in every way.
Victims theres one born everyday.

"I think that this poem is actual two poems. The first one ending with the lines, "Then in misery, as youre wallowing, youll be joined by quite a following." The two parts have such a different rhythm and character that I think they would be stronger if they were seperate entities. " -- John amos.
"Thank you John, your criticism is quite valid. Not one of my better efforts technically, but I think the theme is more important than its presentation." -- RICHARD.
