DESCRIPTION
The UK coined the term "The Industrial Revolution". Once the wheel had turned full circle from unemeployment to employment and then back again, Britain eventually lost it's industrial edge and the factories stood silent. Then came the Age of Communication, when Call Centres became the new revolution. They too are going, in the Age of Globalisation, where jobs are being outsourced to cheaper labour overseas. This poem is dedicated to the above. [154 words]

This Green And Sterile Land Harvey Kennett
Black smoke drifting nonchalantly from the smokestacks of the wasteland,
Where revolution was born and gasped its final breath.
Once blood and sweat, now tears; for the dying as they lay,
Sacrificed at the altar of progress, their legacy a poor man’s wreath.
Somewhere in the night, an unborn child screams,
Denied the right of life through the poverty of the living.
The hands that shaped and turned the lathe,
Broken, betrayed and withering.
Footsteps of ancient ghosts now roam the silent halls,
Listening in vain for the sounds of their wage.
A quietness remains, labour long gone,
A distant memory of a bygone age.
Phantoms from the present arrive to join their idle cousins,
And haunt the halls together in shared imaginations.
This place once defined them, now defiles them,
As they waltz around the dusty shrouds of grotesque machinations.
A dust whom England bore ? Shaped and made aware ?
Not in this field, not anymore.
Fallow and forlorn, the flowers have now gone,
Barren and blunt, God’s Garden is undone.

"Hell of a labor poem! I believe this catches perfectly the struggles of labor and technology. This place once defined them, now defiles them! This sums up the worker..once loyal to the craft and that loyalty betrayed him! Fantastic poem! Take a look at some of my own labor poem! " -- e. rocco caldwell.
