"Here." Tris handed the packet of cheap market gossip to her lord, King Serran of the Thieves.
     "Thank you, my dear."
For a moment Tris's cheeks stained an embarrassing crimson with adoration.
She caught herself by remembering that her young, handsome lord was married already.
"By your leave...?" she let the question hang in the air between them like an echo.
     "Yes, love?" his eyes glinted.
"Well, I was thinkin', maybe...Well, I need two gold Karins, Milord. Mother is still ill, really, she might be gone soon!" Tris's tone of embarrassment turned to desperation.
"You may have ONE SILVER Karin, but remember your place, Trisana deLorenias."
"Thank you, Milord." Tris gratefully replied.
As Tris trotted back to Sol's Way, where she and her family lived, her yellow checked handkerchief folded over the on silver Karin, she wondered what sort of boldness had come over her to ask Lord Serran for two gold Karins. After all, he had already done so much for her family, such as paying for the cottage where they currently lived, and paying her more than fair wages for her work.
She wasn't joking about her mother, though. Her mother had fallen ill with the Plague five years ago and had never completely recovered. She was one of the lucky ones, though. Thousands of Karinakis had died horrible deaths after being struck with the Plague. She however, had simply lost her mind.
Trisana deLorenias was not a beautiful girl. She was simply striking with her clearly Southern heritage along with gray-green eyes and red-black hair. Her hair was always let down, which was unusual for a girl of sixteen, and she was waifishly thin from having lived on the streets at a young age.
She had been ten years old when her new best friend and "Almost-Sister" Gerinah Kollityne had introduced her to the young and handsome Lord of Thieves, Serran laToeria, a dark lad of the age of seventeen from Austril, the Land of the Sun. SHe had become enamored with him at first sight, although he was seven years older than her.
When Serran had found out that she had joined his Eyes, and her family was still living on the streets, he was shocked and embarrassed.
When that awful moment came when he realized that some of his "employees" still lived on the streets, he immediately bout everybody cottages on Sol's Way. Sol's Way was a whitewashed little neighborhood of white and yellow cottages that collapsed completely the Mammies Tales of old which spoke of the evil and slime that hung around The COurt of Thieves.
Tris sighed as she looked at the sturdy cherry wood front door as she thought about the torrent of angry cries that would come from her Father, angry cries like a downpour of stinging rain, blustering about how dreadfully STUPID she was for not having tricked the King into giving her one GOLD Karin instead of the silver one, angry shouts about supper needing fixed, the washing still needing to be done.
Tris's father was a wizened old man, the father of seven children, and the caretaker of a beautiful woman, once his wife, but now his chore.
When Aayilah Aarinah Lorensea was seventeen years old, she had been glad to marry an older man, already well into his thirties, just to get out of the tiny town of Coltsfoot, in Lahine, the tiny backwater country North of Kinberel.
She was never an attentive girl when her mother taught her the ways of homemaking, such as the best tree sap to polish oakwood and other such menial tasks that Aayila Aarinah found boring. SHe would rather learn about the oaktree itself, and to climb it, oh, that was a rare pleasure now thatshe had entered womanhood and wore her hair in the customary braids now.
So when she discovered Grindle Gley deLorenias, a man who required no homemaking skills because he lived in a gypsy caravan and moved from place to place, AND who obviously loved and adored her AND who would take her away from Mother, why it was a dream come true! What she did not know was that she would soon have seven children to look after, be living on the streets, and catch the Plague!
After the Plague, she was still the most beautiful woman this side of Killanr River, but she had no mind left, simply oises, and she was getting worse every day.
