The Secret Of Pimples

My Papa had always told me that you had to dig
really deep to find the best secrets, just like
he'd buried his best secrets in me.
He was right.
I realized it when I was about fifteen years old;
it was the day I woke up to find I had the biggest
pimple I'd ever seen right on my own body.
I hate those big ones, too.
I mean those kind that really swell up BIG. The
big red ones, the kind without a white head on
them so you can't even pop them. You can squeeze
and squeeze and press on it, but the white just
won't pop out.
You can even dig around with a needle to find
the white under the blood, because if you don't
get the white out it will never heal up, no matter
how many times you peel the scab off.
And, if you just give up on the big ones, and
go to school looking that way, the other kids will
see it and you'll never hear the end of it. They
will start calling you names like pizzaface and
balloon.
And it's always dark when my Papa comes in my room
to tease me, saying stuff like, ''I know
you're mad about me taking out your night light,
but you're a big girl now, and it doesn't matter
if it's LIGHT or DARK, that big red one is still
there!''
Sometimes my Papa can be so mean when he's trying
to be funny.
But, one thing I've learned lately is, when a zit
gets just SO BIG, you can pop it, just from the
pressure.
Lately, I've been sharpening a big knitting needle
I found on a whetstone I found in my Papa's
workshop.
Because...this is one of those BIG ONES.
I mean, it's not big ENOUGH just yet, even though
the bleeding stopped three months ago, and there's
no scab left to pick off. But, I don't want to
wait for it to show. Sometimes I lay awake at night,
thinking about that big one forming inside me, and
actually wonder if it's worth more than I am.
I think I'll slide that big needle through my
belly button tonight, right when my Papa walks
through my bedroom door.

For me it is the fact there is just enough there for me to recognize, yet not so much that it makes it someone elses story. That feeling of being totally vulnerable. But they always come back. So I figure why fight it? When I die, people won't remember me for my beautiful skin, but who cares? I have a certain amout of pride about my zits.
