The Red Moon - A ''Short Short'' Tale.
David B Doc Byron

As the night skies darkened over the sleepy
little town of Glens falls, the boy child came
into the arms of his father stillborn.
The grieving yet relieved father wrapped the child
inside a thick white blanket, tied it shut with a
piece of rawhide leather with a crucifix attatched.
He took the cursed package to the water's edge,
weighted it down with large rocks, then dropped it
into the raging rapids below.

It neednt matter; the child was of unatural origins,
his attempts at disposal were futile at best.

The child's mother, a woman of questionable
ways, lay still inside the cabin in her cold bed,
her mouth sewn shut with catgut.
She wouldnt be telling any stories of late. Her husband
was going to sew her canal shut, but was afraid
he'd want it for pleasure at a later date.

And outside in the snow, the savage was loose.

He sat perched upon a hillside overlooking the
small town, and watched as it turned into an icy
grave. The valley below him stood frozen in time;
a storybook setting, white and grey shadows for
miles around, black, twisted trees, limbs heavy
with ice, resembling giant wooden skeletons.
A raven squawked at him from a tree stump close
by; he snatched the annoying little creature from
it's perch, bit off it's head. He let the blood
drip down into his gullet, just to wet his insatiable
thirst, then tossed the drained carcass into the
snow.

He looked down at the blood stain on the frozen
snow with awe, the blood appeared black in the
moonlight, not red.
He didnt always feed on flesh and bone; he also
liked the aspects of human desires, sexual desires.
He would come down into the valley every few years,
and leave behind another cursed child inside a
tainted womb before leaving.
He had hoped for a child to take seed in a womb
for a decade now, but with no results but stillborn.
He wanted a child, a savage child, to carry on his
bloodline, if at all possible.
The savage was a wolf.

Not like the wolves of ancient folklore and
picture books in school, this wolf was a man, and
vice versa.
He was the Loup Carue, manwolf.
Werewolf.
He crept down into the waters below now, and
retrieved the dead infant for food.
He would feast on the remains of his own bloodline,
and gain strength from it.
Then later, on a night of the full moon, would
come back to the frozen and icy town seeking a
mate again.

Up in the cabin on the hillside, the father of
the dead infant wept.

Farther back in the hills, the manwolf howled at
the moon like his ancestors had.

The ancient and deadly cycle had begun again.
