The Night World- Black Dawn Chapter 1
Annabelle Elizabeth Rae Summers
Keller Gallagher woke up to the sound of her mother
screaming.
She'd gone to bed as usual, with Jake the great dane
sprawled heavely across her feet and her two cats
jockeying for postion around her head. Her cheek
was resting on her open geometry book;
there was homework papers scattered among the blankets, along with
fragments of patato chips and an empty bag. She was
wearning her favourite black fitted jeans and her
old Greenday t-shirt, plus the only two socks
she could find last night; One red velveteen anklet
and one blue and white stripy slouch sock.
Those particular socks would eventually mean the difference
between life an death for her, but at that moment
Keller had no idea of that.
She was simply startled and disoriented from being
waken suddenly. She'd never heard that kind of screaming before.
She wondered how she could be so certain it was her mother
doing it.
Something... really bad was happening, Keller realised
slowly. The worst.
The clock on her nightstand said that it was 2:11 am.
And then before she even realised she was doing it,
Keller was moving. She lurched across her bedroom floor,
with piles of dirty clothes and sports equipment
trying to trip her up. She banged her shin against the wastebasket
in the middle of the room and ploughed on right through it.
The hallway was dim, but the living room was blazing with
light and the screams were coming from there.
Jake trotted along beside her. When they got to the
foyer by the living room he gave half a growl,
half bark.
Keller took in the whole scene in a second glance.
It was one of those moments when everything changes forever.
The front door was open, letting the cold air of a november
night in washington. Keller's Father was there, wearing a short
bathrobe and holding her mother, who was pulling and tearing at him
as if she were trying to get away, screaming breathlessly
all thw hile. And in the doorway were four people standing.
Two sheriffs, a national park ranger and Sylvia Weald.
Slyvia. Her brother Miles's girlfriend.
And knowledge hit her as quick and as hard as a hammer blow.
My brother is dead, Keller thought.
