The News
J Shartzer

A man stared across the table at his wife, unblinking, letting the silence crush her. Only the steady ticking of the clock above the stove cut through the quiet. She avoided his stare and instead examined the floor and played with her hair nervously; she could feel his eyes burning into her like hot coals on the back of her neck.

"You're going to get an abortion, right?" The man said softly, his words only slightly slurred, as he was only three beers into the day. He was sure that he'd get is way, and that there'd be no more talk of any "babies". The very idea of wasting money feeding some kid made him sick. No, there would be no children in this house, he thought.

The woman looked up at him and her eyes filled with tears. She shook her head slowly, her lip trembling. She lowered her head again and let her hair cover her face. The man stood suddenly and violently, his chair falling and clattering to the floor. The woman jerked back in fear, expecting a hard fist but getting instead a hard voice.

"Why not? Why not?" He yelled, his voice cracking slightly. She hesitated, not wanting to speak to the man who couldn't possibly be her husband.

"Because. . . 'cause. . . ," her voice trailed off. "I. . . want to keep it." The husband was infuriated. He bent over his wife, fists clenching and unclenching. She looked up at him reluctantly, pitifully, unable to keep from shaking. He'd never hit her before, but he'd never acted like this before. . .

"I'm going out," he said. He pushed passed the woman. Tears leaked form her swollen eyes, cutting fresh tracks in her makeup. She sighed a deep and watery sigh and put her head down on the table. The man pulled his coat off of the rack beside the door and left, icy wind blowing in from the door that was left half open. She attempted to collect herself and steady her shuddering body, but she knew it wasn't over. The look in her husband's eyes had told her that.
