The Moon Tree Xie
Prologue
"No!" A gray she cat squealed. A ginger kit was mewling weakly, swept along helplessly in the tumbling rapids. A dark black dog was disappearing into the shadows, her tail sweeping the thick laurel leaves before disappearing from sight. A dark tom with tabby stripes and a long tail shot forward. His teeth barely missed the scruff of the tiny kit as he was carried away by the merciless current. "Flame!" He cried. A golden spotted tom's eyes suddenly misted. "He's gone. Gone. Gone." The dark tabby stared at the ginger bundle that was hitting rocks as it tumbled down the river. "It's my fault." He whispered. The golden tom licked the tabby's shoulder gently. "It's not your fault, Leopard." Leopard looked furious. "It is! Flash, you know it is!" The gray she cat was still grieving for her lost kit. "Don't worry, Azalea." Flash had started to comfort the misery struck mother. Azalea glanced at him. Then at the river. Her eyes were flaring with hatred. "The next time I see Shadow, I kill her!"
Chapter 1
Leopard's ears flattened in disgust as he looked at the dead dog pack leader. "She should never have challenged us." Then he shook out his tussled pelt. Turning to Kiinaq, he gasped. "Kiinaq! Your turning white!" Kiinaq looked down at his ginger pelt. The lower bits of his fur had began to whiten. Kiinaq didn't look surprised. "I figured this would happen someday. Father, I'm turning into a bear." Leopard was startled. "But this... How... Azalea won't recognize you!" Kiinaq stared at Leopard, wisdom glistening in his eyes. "She will know." Leopard let out a sigh of relief. "Ok." He admitted. They trekked down the mountain, slowly descending into the forest. Tall pines and gnarled oaks stood high and proud, their roots planted firmly into the ground. Kiinaq purred, which was shakily awkward since a bear did not purr. This reminded him of home.
Chapter 2
The moon was rising, making the trees shine with an eerie glow. The last of the rosy dusk sunlight was slowly setting, leaving the once sparkling orange beech trees turning pale in the moonlight. Kiinaq and Leopard crashed their way through brambles and bracken. Stumbling through a bush, Leopard purred. "There. That cave is where we live. Come on. Push through." His long tail brushed the overhanging ivy. Kiinaq's shaggy pelt bristled as he scented coyotes, but he ignored it. "Smells stale." He thought absent-mindedly. As he entered the cavern, he made out a spotted golden tom and a gray she cat in the darkness. The gray she cat hissed. "Stay away from my kits!" Then she stopped, took a hesitant and curious sniff, and gasped. "Flame? Leopard? You're alive!" She ran up to Kiinaq, purring and brushing up against his thick fur. Kiinaq's pelt felt hot. "Hi, Mother." The golden tom looked surprised, but pleased. "Flame? Wow, Leopard you actually found him!" He placed his tail on Kiinaq's shoulder comfortingly. "Kiinaq, the gray she cat is my mate, Azalea," Leopard began, "And Flash is the spotted golden tom." Flash flicked his tail in a greeting. Azalea did the same. Kiinaq settled between Leopard, who had lay down and twined his tail with Azalea, and Azalea. Kiinaq stiffened as he heard a weak mew. "Kits?" He wondered aloud. Azalea nodded gleefully. "Yes. Robin," her tail rested on a little ginger she kit, "And Droplet." She angled her ears in the direction of a glowing silvery-blue tom kit. Kiinaq growled joyfully, and Azalea was frightened. "Is something wrong?" She asked worriedly. "No," Kiinaq replied tensely, "It's just... I'm turning into a bear."
Chapter 3
"What?" Flash stuttered. Kiinaq sighed. He knew they wouldn't believe him. "A bear." He repeated. Azalea glanced at him, then at her paws. "Is it my fault?" She whispered. Kiinaq shook his broad head. "No. I am a part of a prophecy. 'Warmth will fight the cold.' I think this," he stared down at his icy white fur, "Is related to that." Azalea purred. "I hope you're happy!" The two kits had awakened at that. Droplet squeaked. "Mother! What is that white thing doing here?" Azalea licked the top of Droplet's head. "It's Flame, your big brother." Kiinaq nodded. Then he remembered something. "Uh, mother, it's Kiinaq now." Azalea had and impassive look on her face. Then nodded. "Wel then, Kiinaq," she meowed, "How about you go play with the kits." Robin was fully awake by then. Her mouth gaped. "Yeah! I never played with a big white furball before!" Kiinaq rumbled with amusement. "I am what is known as a, "bear"." He joked. The kits purred, then scrambled on top of him. Droplet shook his legs. "Do big pawsteps!" Robin looked like she agreed with her brothers decision. He lifted his massive paws high, stomping down to send a tremor through his huge, muscular haunches. The kits screamed and clung on to him like burrs. Kiinaq let out a happy roar. This was what a family was like.
Chapter 4
A musky odor drifted into his nostrils. "Coyotes!" He thought, horrified. He turned tail and began to lope at a fast pace, racing past trees and bushes, ignoring the kits' annoyed protests. He launched himself from a large rock as he felt blood splatter his muzzle. A coyote was howling, it's eyes burning with fury. "What did I ever do to you?" Kiinaq wondered. He spun around to face them as he landed lightly. He growled to the kits. "Run back to the cave!" The kits didn't hesitate as they scrambled to the den entrance. Kiinaq let out a thundering bellow. The coyotes trembled in fear, but held their ground. Kiinaq plucked a shivering beast from the muddy earth and tossed it aside. It hit a tree with such force that it's spine broke. Kiinaq snarled, whipping around to face the rest of the pack. A glow from his pelt scared them, and they were gone.
Chapter 5
He looked at his sparkling fur.. Where the coyote had landed, the trees nearby began to glow. Suddenly a birch sapling was growing in front of him. It turned into a silvery birch with long, overhanging branches that glistened with morning dew. The leaves were wet, and sap oozed out of cracks in the branches. It was a marvelous sight to behold! Kiinaq decided he would name the tree. He pondered for a moment, then he boldly declared three words. "The Moon Tree."
