The Ivy Cave Xie
Prologue
"He's so blue... And she reminds me of Kiinaq!" A young male was whispering. He was staring with wide eyes at two kittens he had pulled out of the water. "Maybe... Maybe they are his kits?" The huge white bear paused to sniff each of them. "They smell of milk... And a faint scent of... Kiinaq!" He began to rub their fur the wrong way. Once they were dry and warm, he picked both of them up by the scruff. The ginger one let out a mewl, and the silvery blue bundle of fur merely grunted. He dragged them back to the camp. After licking out sand and dirt from between his pads, he walked into his cave. A white she bear was looking at him. "Auq, are those Kiinaq's littermates?" Auq shook his head. Not in a reply but simply to get rid of the sea-tendril between his ears. "Maybe... If they are his younger. Oh, Imiq, I don't know what to do! Would Kiinaq take them in or would he leave them to die?" Imiq nuzzled Auq's shoulder. "He gave you the choice."
Chapter 1
Kiinaq had been traveling for days. He limped from a shoulder wound that he had from a vigorous tussle with a wolf pack. He found a river and bent down to drink. As he lapped thirstily and greedily at the water, he saw green flash at the edge of his vision. Licking droplets off his muzzle, he padded over to inspect it. It was hornwort! Hornwort would heal his wound. He stripped the plant out from between two stones and began chewing it. He licked the pulp into his wound and began limping again. After wading into the river, he began to wait for a salmon. He had met a friendly brown bear named Hashi and had learned to hunt like a brown bear. After a while, he realized this river didn't have any fish. He padded out and continued his journey.
Chapter 2
Kiinaq trekked up the mountain. His claws dug into countless cracks in the ancient rock when he felt rumbling beneath his paw-pads. He ignored it, but it kept becoming stronger and stronger until it was too late. He was already almost to the High Peak when an avalanche struck. He was flabbergasted as the snowy chunks rolled down the slope. He turned tail and ran. He pounded down the steep mountainside, his limp vanishing now that his life was on the line. He spotted ivy hanging from a cavern entrance as he slid down. He hurled himself into the cave as the avalanche hit him and everything went black.
Chapter 3
Kiinaq groaned as he woke up. He was in a dark tunnel. An old, hairless cat was chewing up herbs. He began smothering it on his shoulder. He vaguely recognized marigold through the stinging pain. The old cat turned and left. After a few heartbeats it returned. It was carrying a package of bundled herbs. He dropped them by Kiinaq's paws and commanded, "Eat." Kiinaq eyed the herbs carefully, then replied, "Okay..." Kiinaq's wound had healed cleanly, and he was ready to run, but he ate them anyway. He swallowed them and realized it was chamomile. The old cat was back with daisy, juniper berries, honey, lamb's ear, ragwort, ragweed, and sorrel. He mixed in some heather nectar and soon it was done. He threw the mixture into Kiinaq's gaping muzzle and instructed, "Swallow." Kiinaq mumbled an inaudible response. He gulped down the herbs and saw a seal next to him. "Have some. I caught it for you." Kiinaq began chomping on the meat, sending blubbery, oily fat down his throat. He was famished! By the time he was done, he found that he was also thirsty. But the cat had gone. After a long time, Kiinaq began to wonder if the cat would return.
Chapter 4
Kiinaq decided he was done waiting. He rose to his paws feebly, but after testing each of them, he realized he was fine. He turned to head to outside when he realized he was blocked in! He scraped vigorously and furiously at the snow, but it must have been a long time for the snow had frozen solid. Kiinaq sighed, and flopped back down onto his rump. He didn't know what to do! He turned around to head back into his nest when he noticed there was light ahead. He raced forward, lunging into the tunnel. He padded down many twisting tunnels, but they all seemed to be dead ends. After a lot of scurrying around, he had gotten himself lost. He saw something on the wall of the dead end tunnel, and in the half light he made out ivy tendrils. He stared at the leaves for a long time, then he felt a droplet splatter on his muzzle. He glanced upward to sew a crack in the roof! He clawed at it until he griped the rock blocking his freedom, and heaved it aside. Scrambling up, he searched the area. He couldn't haul his bulky body out, but he did see a couple of caves in the distance. He made out white shapes moving around, and noticed he was only a tree-size away from home! He then heard rushing sounds, and down ward to see water! The tunnels were flooding! He dropped down on all fours. The water was at his belly fur already, and it was rising. "It's too late." He thought peacefully. He buried his head into the ivy and hoped it would all be over quickly. "I failed you, my tribe."
Chapter 5
He was surprised as he staggered. His head shot straight through the ivy! A tunnel led forward from where he was. He sniffed deeply, and detected fresh air! He tumbled through the tunnel as the water chased after him. The tunnel suddenly went down, and he felt the remorse of letting his hopes get too high. "Probably just the air from the crack." He wondered suddenly why he hadn't called out from the hole. Perhaps he could have caught the attention of one of his tribemates. He sighed. "Goodbye." He felt the water rise above his head as everything disappeared from sight.
Chapter 6
Suddenly he was floating above the water. He gasped loudly, and his panting echoed on the walls. He saw the slightest crack of light filtering through a crack, and he was so desperate he clawed at it. He curled his claws around a rock and hauled it out of the hole. More light blasted out. He kept clawing and clawing until he created a big hole. He took a deep breath and wriggled through. He swam upwards, the light getting brighter and brighter until he reached an exit. He gave one last kick, and all of his air was spent. He gulped in oxygen as he emerged out of the water. He shook out his pelt. He smelt the scents of sea-ice and snow. He sighed. No-leaf had ended and Snow-ground had returned. He was home, where he should have stayed for the whole time.
