The Incurable Cynic
A contemptuous disbelief in
human goodness and sincerity.
The incurable cynic, thatís me.
When compliments are paid,
and donít get me wrong,
theyíre not that many,
I still wonder. I always have.
What do they want from me?
No doubt, something in return.
Sometimes Iíd find out right away.
Other times, I never did.
Oh, some were sincere, I guess.
Then again, maybe not.
Itís hard to tell, thereís so many
who believe their own bullshit.
So many who say they care.
They love everyone.
Share your joy, feel your pain.
What do they want? I wonder.
Everybody wants something.
Thatís just the way it is.
Itís human nature to be selfish,
to give in order to get.
Itís true today just as it
was, so many years ago.
I can still hear her voice,
see the look on her face,
when she said, ďI love you.Ē
Why should I believe her?
Why would she love me?
Although its been years,
I still wonder. I always have.
