The Child Who Was Once Within Her Steven L Howard
In their love a child they desired
In her loneliness love she sought
In their home new plans they made
To her home a new friend she brought
And a new life began within her.
In their home a place was made
In her heart denial came clean
In their home prayers were given
In her world a doctor was seen
Who said a child now formed within her
In their home new toys were arranged
In her home mistakes were mourned
In their home new blankets were spread
In her home the bed was forlorn
With just her and the child within her
An account of their life they wrote down
Many life stories did she read
They told how they wanted a child
She thought how she wanted a family
For the child she carried within her
They waited as they knew she looked
She wept as she read their book
Their phone they dared not leave
The match she could not believe
For the child who now slept within her
They danced as they hung up the phone
She rode the bus home alone
They raised up their hands in praise
She bowed her head and prayed
For the child she could feel within her
At dinner they first met her
The meal where she first saw them
Each spoke of the hope that each had
Each spoke of the love that each had
For the child that now stirred within her
In their home they welcomed a visit
From the one who they now called their sister
They beamed as they showed her the room
She smiled as she walked through the home
For the child who now hiccupped within her
In the night their phone rang
As she called from her house in pain
They quickly dressed and drove
She got into their car to go
For the birth of the child within her
They hugged at the hospital door
She embraced them both once more
They held out their loving arms
She gave from her loving arms
The child she once carried within her
In their house the silence was broken
In her home no comfort was found
A baby was fed in the dim light
A birth mother cried in the dark night
For the child she once held within her
They visit from time to time
She always welcomes them in
They show her how he has her dimple
She thanks God that he has them
This child who once grew within her
They thank God for God's perfect plan
When he smiles she can smile again
They rejoice at the life in their presence
She rejoices that he’s with them
He's the child that once lived within her
- Dedicated to our beautiful "Little Sister", and the life she placed in our home

"This is really different for me. I am not a poet, but I could not express this adequately in prose. I do not even know what type of verse you would call this - I didn't try to make it rhyme, but it does in spots. I'm putting this out and asking for critique from all the accomplished poets on the site." -- Steven L. Howard.
"Hi , the story is wonderful, would like to see a bit less repitition, you have a wonderful way of making people understand just what it is all about.keep writingD" -- Diana Venditti.
""Thank you Diana. This is the kind of feedback I was hoping for (And am hoping for from others as well if they want to comment). As I said, I am not a poet. I have repetition on several different levels so I need you to help me see which ones you think I have over-done (Or if all are over-done)." -- Steven L. Howard.
"Hi Seven, I know how hard it is to find different words meaning the same thing,I get rapped over the nuckles when I do it, Take sought, you could use search on one line "In her loneliness for true love she would search" play with it ,it will send you grey sometimes, send me if you wish your e.mail address, I will sent you a couple of things that might help.In poetry many time we shorten lines still keeping the sense. You will get there, after a few grey hairs it comes, At the moment I am writing in poetry form the Scarlet Pimpernel, for the first time I find it does not come quickly, hair has gone from grey to white.LOL D " -- Diana Venditti.
"Thank you Diana. I had thought that paralleling by using the same words brought out the contrast more clearly in the contrasting lines - That's why I need the critique from those like you. I'm going to save this back, and working on the synonyms and see if I can keep the contrast in the sets of two lines." -- Steven L. Howard.
"Revised it Diana. I was not happy with any other wording for the exchange, however. It must emphasize an exchange from one loving person to another. I couldn't find another way that I liked as much as just repeating the same words to emphasize the same love. I think the same love is key in that comparison/contrast." -- Steven Howard.
"Hi poetry is always very personal, and you are probably right, It was just when I repeated in earlier days I got my knuckles rapped so it has become nearly a fixation to avoid when ever poss, but things might have changed since then, love it anyway it says it all so clearly. have copied e.mail so ok I will send test now.D" -- Diana Venditti.
"I am certainly not a poetry expert, but your poem beautiful expresses many of the aspects of adoption that we have experienced. Its lovely." -- Julie Pool, Cleveland, OK.
"it is touching. To me, what matters is what comes from the heart, if it makes sense, that's ok, and this one does make sense, it is beautiful, Steve, keep it up." -- Dri.
