The Cat In The Straw
Steven L Howard

We worked in the barn
On the hot summer day
Moving the old straw
To make room for new hay

When we turned one old bale
and stopped at the sound
As dozens of mice ran
from their place near the ground

As they scurried beneath
the next bale in the stack
Grandfather waved
And said, “Go get the cat.”

I quickly grabbed Tom
Then held him in place
As Grandfather moved
The next bale at the base

The ground sprang to life
And ran every direction
As I threw in the cat
and mice ran for protection

One pounce and he had one
between his sharp claws
But another mouse moved
And he jumped with both paws

Then another mouse ran
Before the cat's face
And ole Tom moved again
leaving that mouse in place

The quick hunter leapt
From this mouse to that
Until all that remained
In the hole was the cat

Then the cat backed his ears
In frustration he growled
While grandpa and I
We laughed and we howled

Then Grandfather said
He's a silly old cat
But there's many a man
Who behaves just like that

When he has a good job
And a family to feed
Always needs greener pastures
He's a wind driven reed

He has what he needs
In the palms of his hands
But jumps here to there
For grand sounding plans

And don't think it stops
With just his career
He'll do just the same
To those he holds dear

He has a lady
Who keeps his home warmed
But his wandering eyes
Makes him think that he's bored

He leaves her at home
Washing his dirty shirt
While he goes and chases
Anything in a skirt

Then one day he wakes up
And finds he's alone
No job remains for him
No woman at home

Now as you grow older
Don't forget what you saw
Nor this lesson you learned
From a cat in the straw

Stay focused upon
The important things
Don't jump up and leave
for the things that chance brings

Hold fast what you need
Don't mind the distractions
Let your moves be with purpose
Not reckless reactions

Take care of that lady
You take as your wife
Forget all those skirts
She brings joy to your life

Then when you look back
At the end of the day
This is the difference
Now hear what I say

Be a true man of focus
The difference is that
You'll be a man of achievement
Not a frustrated cat
