Terence And Abelardo--Set One
Randall Barfield

Title: VitaMINES

Abelardo
What are you doing here? In the kitchen?

Terence
Making a sandwich. Is that a problem?

Abelardo
Of course it isn´t but why did you not say to me?

Terence
I did not say to you cause I don´t feel like begging today.

Abelardo
Begging? When do you have to beg?

Terence
I have to beg far too often if you ask me. (Takes his sandwich to the dining table) Now for a drink.

Abelardo
Stop there! I'll get the drink. What do you think--I'm here for nothing? I do nothing here?

Terence
If you do so much, why aren't the dirty clothes washed?

Abelardo
What would you have? A beer, red wine, or a pop?

Terence
What kind of pop?

Abelardo
Well, we have 7-Up, Coke light, Sprite.

Terence
I'll take the red wine I think. Yes, that'll do it.

Abelardo
Red wine coming up. (Takes it out and begins to pour) Now, about the clothes. Tonight I will be washing the clothes. First I thought you'd like a massage. You do like massages if I remember correctly. While that is happening, the clothes will be washing. Good plan, don't you think?

(Abelardo serves the wine, places a napkin, etc.)

Terence
I guess it is. But you seem to have forgotten one thing. Movie guys are coming over tonight.

Abelardo
Oh, you're right! It's Thursday, isn't it?

Terence
Yep. Has been for about 18 hours now.

Abelardo
How could I forget? And I'm young! What's going to happen to me?

Terence
I wouldn't make a fuss about it Boots. Happens to the best of us.

Abelardo
Pecho. You think I should take vitaMINES?

Terence
(Chuckles) Not vitaMINES, Boots. Vitamins.

Abelardo
Oh yes, vitamins.

Terence
(Hands him the container) Here, try mine. They're multiple. One a day.

Abelardo
(Begins reading container label) One a day. I cannot fail. Do you think they will give me many changes?

Terence
Hmm. You never know, but I wouldn't make any risky bets. Take one now and we'll see what happens in the morning.

Abelardo
Yes, take one now. I'll do that. (Voice lowers) Risky bets, he said. (Shrugs shoulders) What risky bets?

A Very Sad Day

(Doorbell rings. Abelardo answers it.)

Abelardo
Oh, come in. I'm happy you could pay us the visit.

Marsha, a friend
Thanks for leaving the message. What's up?

Abelardo
It's Pecho. He's in his room crying. At least I think he's crying. He won't permit me to enter.

Marsha
Pecho crying? I can't...something must've happened.

Abelardo
That's what I was thinking. But what? What are the news today?

Marsha
The news? Oh, yes. I'm not sure. More or less the usual except for Christopher Reeve.

Abelardo
Christopher Reeve? You mean Superman Christopher Reeve?

Marsha
Yes. He died today. Didn't you know? So truly sad.

Abelardo
Died! Oh my God! I can't believe. That's it. Pecho loves Christopher Reeve. Moreso since the accident.

Marsha
Why won't he let you in?

Abelardo
I don't know, I don't. I'm sorry for him, very sorry.

Marsha
Maybe he'll let both of us in. It's worth a try. (They move together to Terence's bedroom door. Marsha knocks.) Terence? It's me, Marsha. I'm with Boots. Can you hear me? Let us in. Please.

(A long moment passes then Terence opens the door. His pallid face is pain-filled as he looks at his two friends then struggles to talk.)

Terence
Christopher Reeve. Can you believe it? I loved that man. His courage. Inspiration. Oh, my heart! It's broken.

(Abelardo and Marsha go into the bedroom trailing after Terence.)

Break for Family

(Terence's phone rings)

Terence
Hello.

Mrs Hansen
Hi hon, it's me.

Terence
Oh, hi mom. This is a surprise.

Mrs Hansen
Why is that?

Terence
Well, we just talked last week. Thursday, wasn't it?

Mrs Hansen
If you say so hon. I don't argue at my age.

Terence
Oh mom, you're one of the youngest people I know.

Mrs Hansen
That's sweet Terence. I'm afraid my skin isn't so young though. Ask my mirror.

Terence
How is everyone--Dad, the others?

Mrs Hansen
They're all fine... candidates for the funny farm.

Terence
When are you coming to visit?

Mrs Hansen
Me visit? How? I'm your father's slave. And slave to the rest of the crew around here as well. I'm cooking green beans and mushrooms right now. Want some?

Terence
Oh, sounds good. They all love you though. You know that.

Mrs Hansen
They'd better or they'll be on a strict diet. It won't be any Dr. Atkins' diet either.

Terence
Oh, let's not talk about diets.

Mrs Hansen
Why, has your weight shot up?

Terence
Shot's the word. It's shot. (Giggles)

Mrs Hansen
It's all in your mind. Like smoking.

Terence
What mind? I'm middle age and what have I accomplished?

Mrs Hansen
Well, let's not feel sorry for ourselves. I gotta go dear.

Terence
Five more minutes, mom.

Mrs Hansen
No, this is costing me and your father's due back any minute. Now goodbye and be good.

Terence
Okay, goodbye. Love you.

Mrs Hansen
How many ways?

Terence
Many

Mrs Hansen
That's good. Love you, too. (Both hang up)

END of Break for Family

Little Cheep

(Terence is reading the newspaper on the sofa in the L.R. while Abelardo is in the kitchen.)

Terence
Hey. What's for dinner?

Abelardo
Sandwiches and soup. Why, you are ready?

Terence
Am I ready? Yes, I'm ready. I'm starving. What kind of sandwiches?

Abelardo
Uh, typical.

Terence
Typical sandwiches?

Abelardo
Yes, they are typical here...in our country.

Terence
(Suspicious look on his face)

In our country? Well let me ask you this--Do you think they're typical in MY country?

Abelardo
(Frowns) Umm, maybe not. Yes, I think not.

Terence
May I ask you, maker of the soup and typical sandwiches for today, just what meat it is we're talking about here?

Abelardo
"Cordero."

Terence
"Cordero?" That's lamb!

Abelardo
Yes, that's it. Lamb. Little cheep. "Baa," all they say.

Terence
It's little sheep, not cheep and I'm not eating a bite!

Abelardo
But everything is ready! You like trying new foods!

Terence
(Strong emphasis) I ain't eatin' no little sheep! They're biblical practically.

Abelardo
Biblical?

Terence
Yeah, you know, all throughout the Bible. Blood of the Lamb. Lamb of the cross. Eatin' a lamb is almost like eatin' Christ. You Latins--namin' babies Jesus all the time and eatin' lamb!

Abelardo
I guess...uh...never thought like that.

Terence
Just give me the soup, that's all. What kind is it?

Abelardo
"Caldo Gallego." (cahl-doe-gah-yay-go)

Terence
"Caldo Gallego?" That's Cuban. You're a revolutionary!

Abelardo
Maybe it tis Cuban but it was Spanish before was Cuban.

Terence
Gimme the phone book. I'll ask for a pizza.

Abelardo

(Hands Terence the phone directory) How do you say--suit yourself?

Terence
Yeah, that's it. I'm suitin' myself.
