Sweet Revenge
Ashley Mowery

It started out like a fairy tale. Everything was beautiful like a rainbow after a harsh thunderstorm. Johnny had a gentle touch and a warm look in his eyes. I knew I could trust him the instant we met. Things began to take shape after that sweet night we spent together on the beaches of Cabo San Lucas. Although I didn't know him very well, I knew I would spend the rest of my life with him.

We were married only a few months after our spontaneous night underneath the moonlight. The passion was there. I felt it. I knew it was real. After a few months of pure bliss, Johnny began to work late nights. I felt him pulling away. I wondered if his feelings for me were genuine. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was pregnant. I wanted to wait for the right moment. He angered easily and I knew it would upset him tremendously if he knew I was with child.

Long hours at the office began to take a toll on our relationship. After telling him of my pregnancy, he ordered an immediate abortion. Scared, I agreed and made an appointment with the doctors.

Sitting on the bathroom floor, I began to cry. Johnny was a completely different person from the one I thought I knew. His eyes soon turned cold like an icy snow storm in the dead of winter. He no longer had that gentle touch he once possessed. The man I once loved faded somewhere into the shadows.

Walking down the windy stairs, I saw him sitting in his favorite chair smoking a cigar and drinking wisky. He often took part in this ritual after work. He shot me a cold stare and asked if I had visited the doctor. My eyes wandered to the fire place. The fire crackled. It sometimes jumped out leaving dancing shadows on the walls. I turned to him and shook my head no. Enraged, he immediately jumped out of the chair. I was very scared but knew that I shouldn't back down. After all, it was my decision if I wanted to keep the baby. After being pushed a few times, I decided to fight back.

A blank stare was left upon my face. It only took one swing before the madness would stop. All that was left was a warm pool of blood circling my feet. I knew what had to be done. I removed the knife from Johnny's back and replaced it in the sink. Soon, the police arrived and took a report. Accurately, I told the young gentleman of the fight we had. Sympathetic, the officers departed leaving me with the memories of what used to be.

Today, there is no blood on my hands. I had a beautiful baby girl. After all that has happened to me, I live by one motto. Revenge is sweet.
