Swan Dive - Chapter 3 Briony Carvalho
Slowly her mind drifted into consciousness. Her eyes began to focus on the ceiling above her and the stark strip lighting. Towering over her on one side seemed to be a coloured in marble statue of a Greek god and on the other side, a large collection of posters advertising STDs. Slowly her mind began to recollect...Neil, bucking broncos, cars, ow ow ow ow she shot up in the bed and headbutted the moving statue which actually turned out to be a doctor who had been staring at her rather too intently. ‘Ow’ he said, rubbing his temple with one perfect hand as he grinned with his perfect teeth in his perfect face. ‘I’m so sorry’ she blurted before turning scarlet...he’d seen her lady bits! Thumping back onto the bed she realised that sitting up that quickly had made small purple dots swirl on the edge of her vision. ‘I’m Dr Jeremy Brooker’ he said, seemingly not embarrassed by looking at her lady bits while she was unconscious, she blinked, blankly at him. ‘DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE?’ he shouted at her. ‘YES THANK YOU’ she shouted back before she realised he was only shouting for her benefit! Laughing he scribbled something on her notes, probably a referral to a mental hospital. ‘You had an accident, how are you feeling?’. ‘Um, stupid, embarrassed but ok. There doesn’t seem to be any pain...um, down there.’ He smiled again and something seemed to go gooey in her stomach. ‘You’ve had a huge lot of medication as you kept shouting bucking bronco so we thought you may have hit your head. You haven’t actually damaged yourself that badly but you have impressed everyone with your incredibly unique accident! So, care to elaborate?’ She gazed down at her stunning backless NHS number and realised that she had nothing to lose. ‘How about over a coffee?’ She asked, not quite believing her guts. ‘Why not’ he said, offering her a hand off the bed. ‘You haven’t got any major damage and you’ll be under medical supervision so I should think that would be ok.’ Tia smiled and slid off the edge of the bed. Waddling down the corridor she realised, a little too late, that her butt was hanging out the back of the gown. ‘Do you want this?’ Jeremy offered her a paper NHS gown. ‘Ooh with this gown I could be a model’ she stuffed her arms into it and walked down to the cafeteria for some brown granules in warm water with a gorgeous doctor.
Walking like John Wayne into work a week later she had a huge grin on her face and a date with Dr Brooker that night. Despite the fact that her lady bits were throbbing in a rather painful way she felt over the moon. Sitting, or rather perching rather precariously on her chair she flicked through her emails, wondering how she would manage to survive a day without dreaming constantly about the Dr. She was head of a team of staff who all respected her so she farmed out all her work, stuck a HUGE pile of work-like things on her desk and scattered books on the floor to look busy and busied herself planning her day of haircuts, manicures and careful waxing avoiding hurty bits! Her manager walked past her office then walked back again. She smiled sweetly and pulled a face to indicate how much work she had. He popped his head round the door ‘Take it easy Tia, you’re well ahead of targets and you’re still recovering from you accident’. She flushed slightly then remembered she hadn’t elaborated on her accident. He smiled, winked and popped his head out again. Lunch was in order she decided, and went to pick up her phone to call her flat mate Kate then she remembered.
Hating to admit it, Kate had done her a favour. Her life with Neil had become stagnant and repetitive and she had fallen into a rut. She loved Neil but wasn’t in love with him. Kate hadn’t shown her face since that day but she knew she needed to deal with this properly. Revenge and throwing her things into the street would be the best plan. Nodding to herself she grabbed her bag from the desk and scuttled off to lunch with thoughts of prawns, pubic lice and other sweet revenges in her head.
