Strange Omen Xie
Prologue
White fur darted around the clearing. Snarls of defiance ripped through the air. Tension reached its peak and broke. Bears and arctic foxes sprang at each other. The squeals of cubs were heard as arctic foxes ripped them apart. "Siku! Uumatik!" A white she bear cried. She launched herself at the two beasts and snapped their spines. Her rage grew as she saw another fox, and soon she was rampaging through the pack. After a while, the foxes whimpered, turned around and fled, tail between their legs. The she bear bellowed furiously at them. "And don't come back!" She turned to a sturdy young male. "Auq..." Auq blinked unhappily. "Imiq, they're gone."
Chapter 1
Kiinaq's jet black ears pricked at the sound of a shrill wail. His ginger pelt had turned to a silvery reddish dark gray with a golden white stripe and black claws. His black nose sniffed as he scented the smell of a cub. Moving forward, he saw a white shape bobbing in the crack. "Tonrar!" Kiinaq's heavy waterlogged pelt didn't prevent him from darting to the hole and grabbing the cub's limp scruff. Hauling the cold dripping bundle out, he stumbled blindly through the waves and made it out of the camp. Turning to his tribe, he bellowed. "Ikima! Your cub is safe." Ikima ran up to Tonrar and began licking his pelt, rubbing his fur the wrong way to get him warm again. "Momma!" Tonrar cried suddenly, nestling into Ikima's thick white fur. Ikima rumbled happily. "Thank the spirits!" Kiinaq purred. Everything was going to be alright.
Chapter 2
Whipping around, he scanned the camp. It was wet, and even worse, an ice storm had ripped through the camp. The flood water had frozen, and however hard the bears banged on it, it wouldn't crack. He sighed, and then faced his tribe. "Ice tribe, we can no longer survive here. We must leave. We will head to the mountains," he pointed his muzzle to the distant frosted peaks that he had first encountered and battled the Dark Pack, "and make our home in or around there." Sila growled approvingly. "But let's hunt first." Kiinaq nodded. "Any bears without serious wounds, go hunt. Imiq," he turned to the herb-bear, "tend to injuries. I will lead a patrol to make sure the Pack has left and to gather herbs." He turned and roused a few bears, then they headed off across the ice.
Chapter 3
After they realized the Pack's scent was stale, they gathered some hornwort, tansy, and cobwebs and whirled around to head back to camp. As Kiinaq and his patrol neared the entrance, he heard a rustle of a nearby scrubby bush. "Go ahead. Sila, carry this bundle of cobwebs." The grieving she bear had joined the patrol in an effort to rid herself of her guilt and sorrow. As his patrol disappeared into the camp, he padded to the bush. "Show yourself!" He roared. After a moment's hesitation, he stuck his head into the thick vegetation. He noticed a small pup lying in the dense foliage. It's eyes were closed and it only whined when it heard the rustle of leaves. Suddenly rage surged through Kiinaq, and he grabbed it. Lumbering to a nearby seal hole while ignoring the pup's frightened barks, he dunked the pup into the water. Bubbles rose to the surface and exploded, and he vaguely noticed through his fury that the pup was fighting for it's life. After a while, it went limp, and Kiinaq saw what he had done.
Chapter 4
Strangely, he wasn't shocked or guilty. In fact, he was glad. He was confused to the reason why, but his quizzical expression faded as he felt satisfaction pulsing hotly in his pelt. Did he enjoy killing? Was that why he wasn't ever horrified when he saw a dead body or when he accidentally or purposely killed? He began to wonder, when Iji's prophethetic tone whistled through his ears. "The warmth will freeze..."
Series 3: Book 3: Blood Sun
Continue for a bonus scene! Kiinaq's Clan. (Fanfiction)
"Leopardspots! Azaleafur! Flashtail! Foxclaw!" The clan cheered as the new warriors received their names. A ginger tom walked up to a sad Leopardspots. "Don't fret. Icefeather watches over you in Starclan." Leopardspots nodded to the ginger Branchclan leader. "Orangestar, thank you for giving him his warrior name as he died. I wish him a happy life in our ancestor's hunting grounds." Orangestar nodded. "You're welcome. Oh, and Starpelt has good news for you." Leopardspots dipped his head and headed to the medicine den. He saw Skypaw, Starpelt's apprentice, sorting herbs. Starpelt was helping him. Pride shone in her eyes as Leopardspots entered the den. "Leopardspots, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that Azaleafur is having your kits!" Leopardspots purred. Then Starpelt continued sadly. "But, the bad news is that Glitteringsky is also having your kits." Leopardspots gasped. Every tom except him loved Glitteringsky. She was pretty, but stuck up and always boasting. He had realized that she loved him, but he didn't love her. He shook his head, then ran to Azaleafur. "Glitteringsky is having my kits, and you are too. But I love you! Not her!" Azaleafur's eyes suddenly misted. "We must run away from the clan."
She turned to Flashtail and Foxclaw, who had appeared behind her. "Flashtail, come with us. I'm sorry, Foxclaw. You have to stay here and say a twoleg captured us and took us away. Tell Orangestar that Leopardspots loves Glitteringsky." Foxclaw nodded unhappily. Then Azalea whirled around to face Flashtail and Leopardspots. "Let's go." The three of them left the camp. As they headed through the tall weeds that blocked the entrance, they heard Foxclaw. "May Starclan light your path!"
