Stormy was a fluffy white cloud floating happily
in the big blue sky. He enjoyed drifing in the
wind and making different cloud shapes.
He loved his friends, Mr. Moon and Miss Sun.
Stormy was a pretty happy cloud.
But there was one thing that Stormy didn't like
about being a cloud. He didn't like to rain! And
because he was the son of the biggest, darkest
rain cloud in the sky, everyone expected
thunderous things from him.
Stormy didn't like swelling up and turning gray
and black and pouring water down on all the
people and animals. Getting everything and
everyone soaked was not Stormy's idea of fun. And
besides, gray was such an unbecoming color for a
cloud.
Stormy didn't understand why all the other clouds
seemed to be so proud of what they did. One day
Stormy woke up to find his friend Miss Sun
shining brightly. All the other clouds were
complaining that the sun was too hot. They sent
Stormy to tell Miss Sun to turn her beams down a
little.
"But Stormy, said Miss Sun, My dimmer switch is
stuck and I am trying to fix it." "Well keep
trying." Stormy said.
Day after day and week after week went by and
still the rays shone bright and hot. The people
and animals were running out of water to drink.
The trees and flowers were wilting away in the
heat.
Stormy began to worry and went to see his father
But his dad, the biggest, darkest rain cloud in
the sky was sick with the vapors.
"Stormy, his dad said, You will have to move in
front of Miss Sun and block her rays from the
Earth. Then you will have to rain so that there
will be water to drink."
"But dad, Stormy said, I've never done that
before. I don't like it."
"Son, his dad said, Look down at the Earth and see
what not having any water is doing."
"The people and animals are thirsty and the trees
and flowers will die without water. You have to do
it for them. And who knows, once you're tried it,
you might like it."
So Stormy went to look for Miss Sun. While he was
looking, he began to puff up bigger and bigger and
to get darker and darker.
When he reached Miss Sun she said, "My how
handsome you look Stormy. And how glad I am that
you've come to help."
Stormy slid in front of his friend and with a
great rumble of thunder, began pouring great drops
of rain down on the Earth.
How happy everyone was to finally feel the rain.
Children began coming out to run and play in the
cool water. The animals began taking long drinks
and the flowers raised their petals to the sky to
catch the drops.
Stormy was so proud that he began to puff up even
bigger because he knew now that clouds were not
meant to just hang around in the sky. Sometimes
they were meant to save the day!
