Snowy Mountain Xie
Prologue
"He's beautiful!" A gray she-cat cried with joy, pride lighting her eyes as she glanced at a ginger kit trying to suckle. A spotted golden tom purred. "That's Leopard's kit for you, Azalea." A dark tabby tom shuffled his paws. "Stop it, Flash!" The golden tom's whiskers twitched with amusement. "Okay, Leopard." Leopard's ears twitched. Under Flash's light tone, he heard rustling. Dog scent flooded his nostrils. "The Dark Pack!" He yowled as a dark black dog cuffed his head. Leopard spun around to slash at the dogs belly, then dodge swiftly and smoothly as the black male groped for his shoulders. At the corner of his watchful eye, he saw Flash boldly squaring off with a snowy white dog. The white pup nipped at his hind legs while Flash reared up, and Flash collapsed to the ground. The white dog leapt for Azalea. But before he could reach her the ginger kit had clawed the dog's throat. The dog fell to the ground, convulsing and jerking violently. The battle raged on as the white pup died, but the leader had stopped her clash to stare in horror at her fallen pack mate. "Frost! No!" She buried her nose in Frost's bloody pelt. "No." She whispered. The crack of bone sounded through the small cave before Leopard could feel bad for her. He had bit into a dog's neck without realizing and killed it to. The leader stared in shock as she snapped her head around. "Not Rose too!" The leader let out a howl of grief. "Retreat, Dark Pack! Retreat!" The dogs scurried hastily to the entrance. The leader looked around with hatred and contempt in her glare. "This isn't over!" She snarled. Whipping around, she disappeared into the shadows.
Chapter 1
Kiinaq and Leopard trekked up a frosted slope. "That's what happened. After that, they attacked again the next day. You were knocked into the river. Before any of us could get you you were swept away." His eyes were misted, as if he still grieved for Kiinaq's disappearance. Kiinaq fixed him with a glare. Although he chose to go with Leopard, he still didn't trust him. "Well, I'm here now!" He grumbled under his breath. He grunted as he shoved Leopard up a steep but low hanging cliff, then crouched to leap up. When he landed on the top, he gazed around. Spotting a distant white peak on the horizon, he asked, "Is that Snowy Mountain?" Leopard nodded earnestly. "Yes. Home is in the forest beyond. Flash and Azalea are waiting. Oh, and when you meet them, tell them what happened. They will call you Flame, what we named you before you... We're taken away." And with that, he disappeared down the ridge with a flick of his tail. Sliding down the icy, slippery rock, he landed on four paws lightly and turned to face Leopard. "Let's hunt." He went to a nearby frozen river and began to wait for a fish to flash by. As he sat still, rank breath on his hindquarters alerted him. He twisted around to find himself towering over a large black dog. More dogs fanned out behind her. She growled, "I am Shadow, leader of the Dark Pack. What brings you here, trespasser?"
Chapter 2
"Don't you lay a claw on him!" An infuriated hiss sounded beside him. Turning his head, he saw Leopard, fur bushed out and claws unsheathed, standing defiantly at Kiinaq's paws. Shadow's ears twitched. "Why hello, Leopard." Her honeyed voice spat crossly. She turned to face Kiinaq. "Do you wonder why you are with him?" Her tail pointed towards Leopard. "He lied to you. He is not your father. He brought you away from your tribe so he could kill you." Kiinaq gasped. Was she the one lying, or was she the one being honest? Kiinaq stared at her, then at Leopard. Leopard's eyes looked troubled, as though he were remembering something. Then Leopard shook his muzzle. "Kiinaq, trust me. You must come with me!" Kiinaq stared blankly at who claimed to be his father. He glanced up, at the stars shining brightly above him. They glistened brightly as a voice spoke, whistling through his ears. "Make the right choice. Your heart will lead you." "Iji?" Kiinaq thought uncertainly. Then he knew what to say.
Chapter 3
"I'm going with my father." Kiinaq hissed. Shadow's eyes narrowed. Her claws unsheathed and her ears flattened against her skull. "Then you must lace a trial of strength!" She howled. She then glared icily at Leopard. "He will fight me and my pack alone. If you intercede, you and him will be killed on the spot. Understand?" She thundered. Leopard snarled, but said no more. Shadow looked pleased. "Very well. Kiinaq, you will fight on the High Peak tomorrow. Be prepared. We will fight without mercy." She barked an order to her pack, and they raced off into the darkness. Leopard turned to Kiinaq. "I know what you're thinking. I won't interrupt. But if they get close enough to killing you, I'll claw their precious throats out." Kiinaq knew there was no chance of changing his father's decision. Sharing the rabbit, eagle, and salmon they caught, the tore off fatty chunks to chew and swallow. After crunching the rest of the bones, they built two nests out of whatever they could find and settled down to sleep. Before they did, however, Kiinaq told Leopard, "I will not back down."
Chapter 4
Kiinaq awoke early at dawn. Leopard sat up and stretched beside him. Leopard gazed at him, fear in his eyes. "I want you to know," he began, "I love you. And so do Flash and Azalea." Kiinaq nodded. "I love you too, father." They nuzzled each other as they headed to High Peak. Kiinaq saw hazy shapes swarming around on the flat mountaintop, and squinted to make out the dogs of the Dark Pack. He launched himself onto the rocks, turning to face Shadow's pack. "Begin." Leopard mewed, his voice trembling and hesitant. The dogs launched themselves into the melee, racing towards Kiinaq. As he got into a defensive position, Kiinaq heard Iji's voice. "This is a battle to the death. You must kill them, or they won't stop." Kiinaq nodded inwardly. Then, with a mighty roar, he began to use his massive paws to crush the spines of the dogs that came for him. Eventually, one dog got close to his throat, but he threw it to the ground before it could kill him. Stomping on the body of the winded dog, he turned to face Shadow, the only dog left standing. Shadow snarled at him. "I will avenge my pack!" She sprang forward, pushing off with her muscular legs. He clung onto Kiinaq's shaggy pelt. Kiinaq bellowed in frustration, his paws groping for her, but she was able to dodge. Remembering how Auq taught him to fight, he dropped down and rolled over. This surprised Shadow, and before she could jump off his heavy body had crushed her, snapping her spine cleanly and quickly. It was a death full of regret and agony, and as he killed her he heard a voice whisper, "You did the right thing."
