T J Rintoull

She walked out with her friend, leaving him there.

He stood in the doorway, watching them go, his sullen expression belying the mixture of emotions falling through him. The twitch of the peasant skirt her friend wore, the bare milk of her thighs, the way they oozed desire as her hips swayed toward the carriage, did nothing to ease his sorrow. It was her, not the friend, that he watched.

She whose black and white dyed hair flowed further away with each step, her knee length licorice skirt and matching blouse growing ever smaller as she walked away. It was this girl, his lover, that made his heart ache. She who told him she needed alone time, and time with the girls, time in the bathroom, in the shower, at work, and to rest. Always time, time for something or someone else, but never time to share with him.

They drove away, laughing, oblivious.

He closed the door, clutching briefly at the pain in his chest. Wandering toward the living room, he remembered she had left him chores as usual, washing, cleaning, items on a list prepared for no other reason than to taunt his self-esteem. Today he would not complete his slave tasks; he was no slave, rather a lover whose darling had lost interest, or respect, or both.

Plucking a sharp paring knife from the kitchen, he made his way to a quiet place, the only space in their home with a lock something she used, often, to keep him away and seated himself on the floor of the shower. He stared at the fine steel, admiring it, comparing its vicious double-edged beauty to that of his lover, knowing their nature to be intrinsically linked, wishing that it werent so brutally obvious. Cold tiles beneath his nakedness only added to feelings of betrayal and rejection, his tears warming the blade with sorrow as they fell, landing their salt on steel, mixing just a little warmth and spirit with metallic selfishness.

He made his decision.

Whimpering as the cut was made, he forced his will to continue. There could be no tomorrow, not for him, not for them; what he remembered as them was long dead anyhow, and so this was simply the final curtain in a long line of sorrowful and hypocritical acts. Cold, agonizingly beautiful and immaculately clean, just like her, cutting into his veins as she had cut into his heart and soul, the knife knew no mercy as his clenched fist forced it forward, onward, upward, tearing blood from his arm with the disdain of dead metal.

The blade clattered unceremoniously onto the blood-spattered tiles. He fell back, redness still pouring from his arm, knowing sleep was not far off, a peaceful sleep where he could dream of who she had been, never again to see the icy creature he knew she had become. A smile curled at the edge of his lips; now she would have all the time in the world.

He hoped she enjoyed her day of shopping.

"Your story gave a truthful insight into relationships regarding one side.I found it interesting to read, you can tell that there is truth and real feeling, possibly hurt behind it.I think that by using these feelings to convey your story more subtly might work, let the story tell it,rather than stating the feelings outright.it may come across more powerfully.Try not to let your feelings rule the piece.I was confused as to the period of the writing as well.I think it could be a memorable story though." -- Rachael haydon, pulborough, england.
"Thank you, that's really helpful - I am glad to hear constructive criticism, it aids me in improving. Thanks!" -- TJ Rintoull.
