Sheepshead Bay Station

Sheepshead Bay an express station on the New York City Subway’s BMT Brighton Line. Located in the “downtown” district of the neighborhood of the same name in Brooklyn, it is served by the B express train weekdays and Q local at all times. The station has changed drastically since its completion to provide safe and reliable service to every generation of riders.
When this station opened in 1908, it was the terminal for all trains on the Brighton Line, as the extension to Brighton Beach was not built until 1917. The line would be extended further to Coney Island two years later. The station’s appearance was considered new for the beginning of the 20th century. The two island platforms were made of wood and shorter than they are today. They were replaced with new, longer concrete platforms in the 1970s. The extensions are hollow underneath, making the end points of the older platforms noticeable. Steel canopies were added on both platforms and the staircases that go down to the un-staffed entrance at Voorhies Avenue near the Belt Parkway. New platform lights and station signs were installed in the 1980s and 90s.
Before the station received a major overhaul in 1998, the primary entrance at Sheepshead Bay Road and East 16th Street contained older, waist-high turnstiles and a full-height exit-only turnstile. They were replaced in 1997 with tall-bar turnstiles that accept MetroCards, which were quite new at that time, and a service gate that had to be opened by the token booth clerk. In 2006, that gate was converted into an emergency exit, which allows riders to open it by themselves, but this triggers a loud safety alarm. For this reason, you should only go through these types of gates in a real emergency as the name implies or you can get ticketed and/or arrested. Behind the token booth was a passageway that led to an indoor strip mall on the second floor of a nearby building.
After the renovation, artwork called Postcards from Sheepshead Bay by Deborah Goletz was added to the station’s mezzanines. They can be seen near the platform staircases and main entrance doors, the latter of which contains windows in place of human faces in the mural that let people look into the station from the sidewalk and vice-versa. Modern looking doors, walls, and signs were installed, but some historical features remain. The passageway to the indoor mall was sealed. In 2001, MetroCard Vending Machines were added to both entrances and six years later, advertisements were placed on the glass panels of the platform signs. These ads for nearby places or services have varied over the years. In late 2008, an overpass spanning the express tracks that connected both platforms was added near the north end of the station. This was for those needing to transfer between directions during rebuilding of the nearby Neck Road and Avenue U stations. The bridge was torn down in September 2010. The Voorhies Avenue exit does not have an actual stationhouse that separates it from the streets and its booth was taken out in 2010 to save money.
The Sheepshead Bay station is different now from the day it opened. It was originally the southern terminal for the BMT Brighton Line, but today, there are four additional stations down south (Brighton Beach, Ocean Parkway, West 8th Street-New York Aquarium, and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue). B trains terminate at Brighton Beach while Q trains continue to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue. The platforms were made of wood with nothing underneath in 1908, but are now longer (about 600 feet) and made of concrete. Before its 1998 renovation, the main entrance contained waist-high, token-only turnstiles. Now it has taller, MetroCard turnstiles like all other stations in the system. A high exit-only turnstile stood by the token booth, but has been replaced with an emergency gate. A passageway that led to a nearby indoor strip mall has been sealed off.
Like every station in the New York City Subway, Sheepshead Bay undergoes constant maintenance to ensure it continues operating properly and this has kept it open for well over one hundred years. As the city’s population goes up, so does ridership in the subway and with capital construction a big priority in the MTA’s financial plans, the system will get better as time passes.
