ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I was born and raised in the beautiful island of Jamaica for 12 years. Then I lived in New York City for 3 years, until I somehow ended up back in Jamaica and lived there for 5 years. (By now you should have guessed my age) I am currently a college student in the US majoring in sociology and a minor in English. I love writing very much but since I returned to the US I have found it rather difficult to re-ignite that flame and passion that I had for writing. Hopefully as I post my work in Storymania, I can receive constructive criticism, or reviews of my work. I welcome negative reviews of my work because I feel this can help me to make my writing better. Things like, “this poem sucks!” or “I don’t understand anything you are talking about in this writing,” I welcome with open arms.
I have traveled around, and have numerous experiences as it relates to the environment in which I’ve lived in. I admire diversity and culture, and hopefully someday, my admiration and interest in the various ways in which people live their lives can influence me more profoundly to reach out to people. I feel that writing is a way to start and gives me a chance to cut across borders and transcend across the continents, across ethnicity and race. Especially since I attend a university that is historically white, and 90% of the students are white middle-class Americans and I myself is of African descent. My passion for diversity increases the more I am in this kind of environment.

Russle

The rest of us in the coolness of the night
Is about to be for the rest of our lives
Sunrise.
The pharmacy, Kingston Ja
8pm.
Robbery attempt.
Shoot out.

Why they always aim for you head or heart
Thinking it was going to be a regular day from the start
Like everyday shopping at Mega Mart
Russle the innocent is dead
Got shot in the head

The gunman
One with cornrows in his hair
Shows that a woman loves him dearly
However he expresses fear for the system
In the most destructive way
No Russle the innocent is dead
Got shot in the head
He was the security
Never one with such goodness of heart
Such patience and kindness
The gunmen
Never hurt any woman
Symbolizing their girl or mother
Or would they hurt the little youth
That hid under the counter, frightened
They hurt Russle
Russle represents a guilty enemy to them
But he was just an innocent stranger
They shot Russle
In a hustle, the shot Russle
Took his gun and run

These ghetto youths
sniff cocaine
Take drugs
So they could hide the truth of their actions
In the streets of the ghetto where
The firing of shots never end
As they war among each other
Not realizing that they’re really brothers
Then war amongst the police
They see a man with a gun whom they
Do not interact with
Target him as the enemy
Purpose to destroy him

The system has changed these
Ghetto youths from the truth
There’s one with the cap hiding his face
RIP Russle
Died on the stairs of duty
In Sunrise Pharmacy
