E Rocco Caldwell
I have been here before…
It's like lingering deja vu and it makes me sick. The transportation, the moments filled with alienation and then the vividness that follows….
"Let's try this one more time, professor," he says letting his eyes roll inside dry sockets. The electric hum of the lights stain the gray wall like paint. Electricity is my friend now.
"I told you a hundred times already for God's sake!" The disinfectant is like cigarette smoke. Discombobulation follows…no kidding I rest my head in my hands. What I tell him seems diminutive as he passes through my words like wading through water.
"Tell me it one more time," he answers. He's left handed writing notes on his pad. Time, funny he mentions time!
"There's incredible warmth that strikes you and then thoughts come like the waves of an ocean splashing down over you! Events merge like water colors." He doesn't react but I know he will.
I have been here before at the crest of the lake in the shine of the moon; the myriad of frozen matches in the evening sky. There's the sound of the wind stroking the water creating ripples and motion…kinetic energy linking everything to one another.
"Can you maintain your focus?" he asks me. I'm unsure if it's now or then, the past or the present. I assure him I can. "You're drifting in and out making your statement incoherent, sir!"
"Your confession to two murders…"
"Ah, yes, that is right. I nearly forgot."
I lean back in an attempt to stabilize myself or is it to anchor me in this reality? He's correct that I am drifting. I see the photographs on the table of a beaten woman and I think such rage and realize that I know her! I've seen here before standing near the boathouse. No, inside the boathouse. She's not alone, she is never alone. She's much younger than I am and I have spent too much time on my theories which pushes her away. That is why she is inside the boathouse with him! I taste the rage again.
"Professor, I need for you to pay attention," anguish rattles in his voice. I recall how his anger rose like a crescendo. "What happened when you found them inside the boathouse together?"
The theory is fanciful science...no, it's impossible but I manage to accomplish time travel. I have proved Einstein and the other wrong because I am holding my mother's hand outside the boathouse. It's a wondrously warm summer afternoon. I am nine years old. Her red hair shimmers like finely spun copper. The scents of pine and honeysuckles are robust. Each time it is real. I would argue more real, each time even though I have experience it. I expect a breeze against my face and it arrives.
"Okay, Professor, when did you enter the boathouse? What time was it?"
"Around seven…she was expecting me to be home at nine, but I knew already. I knew it all!"
"You knew she was having the affair?" he asks.
"I have always known! I knew standing holding my mother's hand. I knew when I first met my wife in one of my physics classes at the university. I knew because I have always known!"
"What is that suppose to mean?" The detective snaps!
"Time can be seen in the movement of water through a lake…the ripple in so many words. Traveling through it one becomes the ripple and events never end. They just merge. A person lives all the events at the same time eventually growing insane!"
I recognize the corridor it takes me from my cell to the chair. The familiar priest is walking beside me. I don't believe in God but the priest is a comfort. The events do more then merge! They recycle like energy! I smile at the spectators behind the window as they seat me in the chair. I have learned to like electricity.
"How many times did you hit them with the oar?"
Was I already insane when I killed them the first time?
I am standing at the edge of the lake placing my feet in the same position they always are in that night. I see her and him enter the boathouse. The anger I once felt is no longer there. It is like watching a movie I have seen a hundred times before. The moon's silver filter around me like pixie dust. I can see silver on the surface of the lake. I watch myself strike her over and over again!
There's the jolt of electricity through my body and it's like honey in my mouth as it burns my body and my mind and for a brief moment there is only darkness and then I am born again. I see my mother staring down at me. I see her shimmering copper hair. I see her smile. I have always seen that smile…there on the edge of the lake in front of the boathouse.

"This is a story about a man that is about to be executed. I have concluded that this is a story about man talking about his life, sort of describing the main events in his life like a story. It's like what they say, right before you die your entire life flashes before your eyes, the man is just saying that our life's events and obstacles are all tied into one another and that we all inter- linked to each other through energy. Through his beliefs the man has accepted his fate and is prepared to die." -- Michael .
"Michael, I really enjoyed your analysis of the story and thought your hit on some very good points that even I as the writer missed. I liked that you said we are linked together by energy...that is a very profound statement...it rests in a deeper cosmic debate over what are we? Spirits or energy? Is the protagonist really a time traveler or is he just on the verge of death? Well done and thanks for the words!" -- e. rocco caldwell.
"These are very interesting thoughts and what a great topic. YOur ideas and writing are magnifacent. I don't understand why you aren't a big time writer. Well, I enjoyed this story very much, and would apprieciate it if you would review my storys and tell me what you think. Thanks. " -- Moses M. Constable.
"Hey E. Rocco, you review a lot of my work. I am now going to review yours. I thought it was great! You are really good. I only hope to be as good as you one day. I've put up some new pieces, would love to get your review. " -- Skyler Drevan .
