Redemption Part 0ne David B Doc Byron
I drink, therefore I am.
At first you drink because it gives you a high,
a quick rush. It can make you feel euphoric at
times you'd otherwise feel suicidal. At times I drank in
the past, I would feel invulnerable, invincible.
But after so many years of drinking 24-7, you just
feel numb.
But you like feeling numb; and you also like being
invisible. When you are numb and invisible, you
dont have to worry about feeling human anymore.
And believe me, Ive grown tired of feeling human.
Its hard enough to wake up everyday and looking in
the mirror at the face of someone you used to know
a long time ago, but has since vacated the premises
leaving nothing behind but an empty, dark, dusty
void that used to be your skull that actually used
to house brain cell activity.
The euphoria is gone.
A drunk is a person who cant even stand
themselves.
And when a drunk sobers up, God forbid, even one
is a crowd.
I had found that over the last few years I could
come up with alot of good excuses for drinking;
Number 1# To unwind. Which I normally didnt, I was
usually wound up tighter than a powdered nigger's
asshole.
Number 2# To be sociable. Which I normally wasnt.
I was a bigger hermit than Rip van Winkle.
Number 3# To cure a headache. Impossible. Most
mornings Id wake up so hungover it felt as though
my head was filled with little tiny men carrying
little tiny sledgehammers, slamming them against
the walls of my skull.
And, last but least, Number 4#.
To help me sleep. Although, that was never a major
problem, Id usually just pass out.
Oh, I almost forgot. Excuse number 5#.
To escape the past.
Impossible. Father time is cruel old bastard; at
times he is like a sinking ship under your feet,
if you keep sailing your boat up the shit creek
of your own past once too often without a paddle,
you may just get your feet wet.
At times I remember feeling like a walking dead
man with amnesia who thought he was still alive.
I wanted to escape the past; It hurt me.
It scared me.
Lately, I had started to become a man who had
been at war with life too long and had drank up
all of his ammunition.
But still, each waking day, I could look into
the mirror at what I had become, but still would
have swan dived into hell wearing gasoline soaked
swimming trunks if it had meant getting another
drink.
I drank, therefore I existed.
Get the connection?
I hope you never have to.
I am a walking, talking, zombified, crucified
unholy mess of a man; a member of the walking dead
who's eyes are still open and brain cells still
function, but though the lights are on nobody's
home.
Unless I want them to be.
But just because those lights are dim doesnt mean
that the address had been vacated; Im still in
there, you just have to knock loud enough for me
to hear you. {preferrably, use a full half gallon
of Jack Daniels to pound the door with.}
Keep in mind, though, that just because I open the
door doesnt mean Ill have an answer to any lame
inquiries you might happen to dream up for me.
Ive heard it all before; every sob story in the
book of sorry-ass excuses. Ive had my shoulder
soaked with crocodile tears. Whats really wild is
the excuses people come with for renting my
''services'' for a few hours.
The most popular excuses in order are:
1# My husband or wife is cheating on me and I want
you to kill their rotten asses.
2# hey, Leon, believe it or not, I really am a nice
person, but I sure could use your ''services''
this Friday night.
Me: Oh yeah? Whats the job?
Client: Oh...nothing much, and Ill pay you $10,000.
Me: Pay sounds good, but I never let money
influence me to make hasty decisions. So, Ill ask
you again. Whats the job?
Client: Thats uh...well, uh...
Me: Im not going to creep up on some poor sucker
carrying a piano wire necklace in my hand, and
not know why Im there. Thats not my style.
Client: Fuck it then, Ill find somebody else to
do the job.
Me: Oh yeah? Well, fuck you too. And by the way,
do the job yourself. It may be a lot riskier that
way, but its cheaper.
And last but not least, excuse number 3#.
You know, Leon, Ive got this rich prick Uncle
thats laying in his deathbed right now, has..uh..
cancer of the testicles, I mean his nuts are
swelled up like hard boiled ostrich eggs, and he's
got this big fat insurance policy, you know? All
he needs is one swift kick to the balls......
Yeah, right. Ive seen it all, Ive heard it all,
and Ive been around the block a helluva lot more
times than once, kiddo.
And having been there, I can honestly testify to
this fact;
You can be the most cold hearted, calculative, stone
hard killer on God's green planet, but still wake
up one day and seek redemption.
Thats right; REDEMPTION.
Inner peace, forgiveness. Call it what you like,
whatever makes you feel better. Whatever floats
your boat, man.
You will seek it, eventually.
And sometimes the sooner the better.
Ill explain this process to you momentarily,
but first things first.
First, its time for a strong drink.
