Once Upon A Midnight Snacking
Christian Obermanns

Once upon a midnight snacking, all my friends, they were attacking,
Jumping over hill and dale on my computer screen-
Bullets flew and missiles roared, points adding up as I scored,
Watching for the right-hand click that would mark my bitter end.
Then a rocket, gone astray, looked at me and found its way.
Into me the warhead plunged, its
Explosive content was soon expunged,
From behind the white enameled monitor, I heard a ghastly roar,
It echoed faint You want some more?

My torso moved and somewhat jolted,
Towards the door that was soon bolted,
Into death traps and large spiked pits that littered my chosen path.
Suddenly, I heard a laughing,
No, not that, more like a cackling,
Coming from my distempered friend that I had chosen to ignore.
He called to me You want some more?

My teammates closed around the base,
Moving quick, making haste,
But were soon stopped cold by hidden mines and gun turrets galore.
Suddenly, there came a knocking,
No, not that, a hidden stalking,
Rearing up its ugly head from above my wooden floor.
The voice pronounced, You want some more?

Eating chips, which were quite tasty,
I grabbed a gun, thumbing the safety,
Eager to make up the foolishness of that which I had done before.
I ran to cover, ducking blindly,
Acting rather cool and sultry,
When a bullet picked me off from a ledge above the store.
The voice declared, You want some more?

Angry and quite flared of temper,
My body sat on ground, dismembered,
Torn apart from long hours of hard, continuous play.
The others sat in perfect awe,
In disbelief of what they saw,
I had vowed to take my mortal foe down one on one, until the death.

The match began amongst perfect splendor,
The two contestants suavely entered,
Both carrying ancient weapons blessed to settle a mighty score.
All the while, I was plotting.
Plotting was I, never stopping.
Mind set out to find a way
To defeat my hated, cursed foe.

And when I gained the upper hand,
My victory was soon in plan,
I smote the evil dynasty that was my frightened friend.
I stopped to thank my beloved mouse,
All the while, throughout the house,
I ran and screamed into the dark, oh the darkness I adore.
Who had helped me become a matador.
So, my friends, who wants some more?
