Oakclaw's Struggle Part 4 Xie
Frecklewish came in and stared down at him and her leader, her eyes glistening in pure sadness, but it was replaced by an impassive gaze. "Sharpclaw, we must travel to the whispering cave." "But our home was destroyed by badgers! How can we get past them?" Sharpclaw growled, gritting his teeth in grief for his deceased leader. Frecklewish simply stared at him, an omen in her eyes. Then rain fell from the ground, and an ember in Leafstar's fur rolled out towards the damp entrance of a small tunnel in her den, where it began to take the form of fur. Near the entrance, there was an oak sapling, growing in a claw shape despite the size of the cave. Frecklewish stood up. "It was an omen. A bright pair of fire and plants, claw and fur will twist and turn through their tunnel of hardships. Oakclaw, Emberfur, head through the tunnel." She angled her ears toward the small opening. We glanced at each other, then I slithered tensely into the cavern.
My pelt suddenly started to glow, with a bright and feisty explosion, it burst into flame. It warmed my pelt and the light lit up our path. I glanced back Emberfur. Her pelt was just as aflame, making the air around us ripple with light. We padded towards a blue glow penetrating through the darkness at the far end. We burst through the entrance to the cave. We saw a mighty oak, a glowing, piercing blue leaf at the foot of it. "Touch the Moonleaf," A million voices echoed, yet it sounded like on whole sound at the same time. We both tensely touched our noses to the leaf and settled down.
I saw a brown and white pelt materialize, blurring as it zigzagged gracefully toward me. "Leafstar!" My gasp rang clear across the hollow. Leafstar eyes brightened. "Welcome to Starclan, Oakclaw!" She purred. She then touched her nose to mine. "With this life I give you the ability to say the truth." A blast of warmth shot through me. I found myself staring at Billystorm, Leafstar's mate and my foster father. My head whirled. Then the vision ended, as abruptly as it began. "I'm getting nine lives?" I asked in shock. Leafstar laughed. "Yes, Oakclaw." Then she vanished. Another cat took her place. He dipped his head. "My name is Rainfur." He touched his nose to me also.
"With this life, I bring calmness and the ability to be peaceful, like ice in leafbare." A bolt shot through me. More and more jolts of pain clawed at me, but I was unable to defend myself. Normally, I would have been angry or frustrated, but instead, I was able to maintain my temper. The painful experience ended. I looked for Rainfur, but instead, I saw Rabbitleap.
"With this life, I give you the ability to stop and give in. The ability to see when it is pointless to keep fighting." Enemies leapt at me from every side. I fought back the urge to face them, knowing if I did, I would surely die. Instead, I fled toward a bright light, able to escape. When the vision ended, I saw a different cat step forward.
"I am Skywatcher." He rumbled. He touched his nose to my head. "With this life I give you endurance." My paws hardened and my tail went still. My heart stopped. Though it was only for a few heartbeats, it felt like moons. Then the hardening died down.
I rocked on my paws, my lives heavy in my chest. I then saw Rabbitstar, my father. The pain I had felt before raged through my veins, freezing my blood. He purred, a sound which warmed my heart and melted my frozen body. "I am proud of you, my son. With this life I give you the love of a father, for you have never experienced it before." Shock dazzled through me. I noticed a ginger, wretched cat cornered by a dog. The cat, a tom, noticed me and yelled a word that made a frosted thorn jab through my heart. "Father! Father, help!" My claws unsheathed. I wanted to scatter the dog's guts from the alleyway all the way to the forest! But before I could reach the tussled pair, the vision ended. My mouth was dry as I whispered, "Thank you." Rabbitstar purred again. "Good luck."
My four other lives were forgiveness from Cloudstar, kindness from Spottedleaf, acceptance from Ashfur, and hope from Firestar. My chest felt heavy and my head felt light. I vigorously shook out my wet, ruffled pelt. Then, I questioned, "Why did you choose me instead of Sharpclaw?" Leafstar stepped forward into the dazzling starlight, pale moonlight showing her groomed tortoiseshell pelt. "Because when we built Skyclan, now Iceclan, he was chosen to forever be deputy." She purred, setting her tail comfortingly on my shoulder. "Also, you have been betrayed, and it was your destiny to be betrayed so you could become a strong leader. Sharpclaw will become leader when you die. I have a prophecy for you, Oakstar. You will make things right. When the time comes, I know you will..." The last words echoed longingly as my ancestors began to fade. The moon and stars swirled around, blurring and contrasting as their light got brighter and brighter until there was a magnificent burst of moonlight and starlight.
My eyelids flew open abruptly. I had awakened. I twisted around and rose feebly to my paws. My confusion cleared as I noticed Emberfur sleeping peacefully next to me. Then she too stood up, swaying on her weak paws for a moment before glancing at me. She purred blissfully. "Is it time to go?" I stared at the Moonleaf. It's light brightened as if what Emberfur had suggested was what our ancestors wanted us to do. I twined my tail with her's and we padded out of the massive cavern, our pelts glowing just as brightly as the Moonleaf.
I slithered with pure frustration and heavy exhaustion as we emerged gratefully in Leafstar's-- no. My den. Our fiery pelts faded and returned to dust caked fur. As I settled down in my nest, I was vaguely aware of Starpaw and Emberfur gazing at me worriedly. I sighed as Emberfur began to lap gently at my ears. I settled down. Everything in me calmed. I felt peaceful, at last. As my eyelids fluttered, I realized Emberfur had slid in with me. We fell sound asleep, exhausted by our dreams.
Lightning flashed brightly, dazzling the storming, dark violet sky before me. Thunder blasted in bursts of loud, deafening sound, shaking the trees and bushes. I trembled, not because of the overwhelming fear that erupted from my raised hackles and my stiffened muscles, not because of the freezing, cold frost that seemed to refrigerate my tense body, but because of the shock I felt as my father appeared. At his side was a cat with a russet and orange pelt that glowed like the stars and a chest and belly so silver it glittered like frosted stone in early morning sunlight. I gasped. "Mother?"
The beautiful cat purred. "Yes, my precious kit. We love you more than both of us can ever say. We are proud and happy to have such a strong son. I hope you can forgive us for not being able to give you the love and support of a father and mother." Then the stars swirled dizzyingly and the moon spiralled in a circular motion, falling from the cloudy, dark sky and landed on the ground with a crash. Cats screeched and hissed, growling and snarling in defiance and rage. They launched themselves wildly onto their enemies, whirling and rolling around furiously on the ground in a mass of convulsing legs and tangled fur. Blood of the fighting cats stained the ground scarlet like deathberry juice and dead bodies were strewn about carelessly. Oakstar shivered, not realizing that rage, the emotion that clouded his heart for so long, could do. Sunheart purred. "When the time comes..."
