Oakclaw's Struggle Part 1 Xie
I remember the day Skyclan had to leave the gorge. I was a mere apprentice and had no experience whatsoever at traveling. We were driven out by an entire clan of badgers. The battle was gruesome and grim. The vicious creatures had us cornered. With a roar, the ruler of the badger clan plucked me from the ground. I shrank beneath my pelt. Then, with a deafening growl, he tossed me aside. I was startled by the strength and the hot waves of fury emitting from the muscular beast. I landed with a hollow thump into a fox burrow. As I stumbled feebly to my paws, I heard a enraged and frightened bark from deeper within the darkness. I was lost, so I decided to venture further into the den.
The stench of fox was suffocating. The darkness was thick and the tunnel was starting to get smaller and smaller. By the time sunlight had started to shaft into the burrow, dappling the ground like a shoal of minnow swimming through a current, I met a tight squeeze. I squirmed through the tiny opening and found myself in a large, dark place. I figured this must be the main area of the fox den. The creature's rank odor bathed my scent glands. I coughed as I gave my dusty pelt a groom. As I ventured further, I realized something was horribly wrong.
I screwed up my eyes. I noticed a bushy, red tail lashing in the darkness. I reared up and slammed my paws down on a thick, sleek pelt. Only then did I find out I had made a terrible mistake. The beast, a fox, dug it's fangs into my scruff. It lifted me into the air like a piece of fresh kill and threw me against a crumbling wall. My weight sent a clot of dirt cascading down. It showered over the fox. I heard whining and realized there were cubs! But it was too late. The earth around me was rumbling. I darted out of the den. I raced through the burrow. I slipped past the minuscule opening. I saw milky sunlight filtering through the gnarled roots of the ancient sycamore on top of the den. I leapt onto slippery tussocks and collapsed onto a sun warmed stone not a moment too soon as the tunnel caved in behind me.
My sides heaved and my muzzle was half open, gasping in dull agony for breath. I closed my eyes and the pain faltered and faded. When my eyes snapped open, Silverpelt was shining above me in a dark, indigo sky with only a sliver of white rabbit fur as a moon. I rose groggily to my paws. My wounds were on fire and the scratches on my flank and muzzle stung as if a bee had drilled it's stinger straight into the torn flesh. Although my mind whirled in confusion, I knew one harsh fact. I had to find my clan by myself.
The next day, when the sun was shinning brightly and joyfully dancing through the sky, I set off. My wounds were closed, but still bleeding badly. I decided to find some horsetail stems and some cobwebs. I had heard Frecklewish, our medicine cat then, muttering herbs more than once as she wandered aimlessly through the camp clearing. I heard her mention honey and horsetail poultices for wounds and cobwebs to bind together broken bones or to stop flowing blood. I headed with new confidence towards the cliff.
I limped over to a rock and as I turned for the ridge, I saw some cobwebs in the crook between the stone and the dirt. I stuck my good paw in and hauled out an entire ball. I then padded weakly to the ridge. I saw horsetail growing in a muddy patch of earth beside a patch of comfrey. My shoulders relaxed. Now I could fix my broken paw! I chewed the comfrey into a paste and licked it onto the broken bone. I then plucked a few horsetail plants out of the strewn clumps of wet dirt and chewed the stems into a poultice. I smeared the poultice over my wounds, wincing and flinching every time a painful but relaxing tension tingled in my pelt. When I finished treating my wounds, I covered them in cobwebs. By the time I was done, My warrior ancestors swam in Silverpelt, now a sea of stars swirling in the night. I settled underneath a hollow rabbit burrow and drifted off into sleep.
I sensed watery dawn slithering through my pelt. I yawned and sat up in a luxurious stretch. As I pulled up sharply, a musky aroma bounced in my nostrils, enwrapping my scent glands. I instinctively dropped into the hunter's crouch. I crept slowly but surely out of the tiny den. My ear fur trembled as I detected a vole, rummaging through the leaves beneath a young oak. I pulled myself up smooth as a snake.
In a sudden flurry of paws, I jumped! My tail swished through the leafmold, and as it did so, the vole bolted from under the leaves, skittering away. I scampered after it, my pelt tingling with excitement. I slammed my good paw on it and broke it's fragile spine with a deft claw. Muttering my thanks to Starclan under my breath, I tucked into the mouthwatering fresh kill. When I finished the body and tail, I dug a small hole in the loose earth. I buried the head and bones and whispered to Starclan that it was a gift, for being so generous and sympathetic.
