Chapter 1
The Anniversary

With the memory of his fathers death in the air, Nathans dreams pull him from his peaceful sleep. Reliving the day his father was gun down in cold blood during a routine traffic stop, while Nathan was in training for joining the Chawston Police Force. He passed through his education with flying colors and now he just needed the month of real training. By the time they found the car that the suspects were in, they had already ditched it and was probably across the state border. Not only was it a day he cant forget but it was on his birthday. That day is today.

As he pulled himself from his bed, Nathan grabbed his uniform and hung it on the closet door, next to the shower, and then looked at the clock before turning on the shower. Damn it, its 4:30, dont have enough time for breakfast, I hardly have time for a shower. Nathan stripped down and jumped in the shower. Everyday, hoping the shower would wash the nightmares away but it never helped. He just wished he could put the assholes himself behind bars or send them to their grave. Nathan doesnt have any family left really; his mother is an alcoholic and fearful for Nathans choice of a career especially after what happened only a year ago and his sister, whos in rehab for almost overdosing on heroine, the day after she found out.

After drying off and getting his uniform on, Nathan double checked the clock, which read ten till five. He shook his head. Im gonna get my head chewed off for this. I cant believe it. He walked through his house and grabbed his keys off of the counter before heading out the front door. While opening the car door, the dispatcher was calling for him on the C.B.
Car 43, Car 43, are you there, over?
Nathan grabbed the radio quickly and responded.
Yes, this is Car 43, Officer Nathaniel Chase, whats the situation, dispatch, over?
Glad to hear from you, been trying to reach you for the last half an hour, over.
Really? You know I dont start till 5, over?
I know that but the chief was hoping to catch you before you got here, over.
Why did he want me so early, over?
I dont know, let me direct you to him, over.
Roger, over.
As Nathan waited for the chief to answer, he place the keys in the ignition and started the cruiser.
Officer Chase, do you copy, this is Chief Karklen, over?
Affirmative chief, this is Officer Chase, I copy, whats up, over.
I just wanted to let you know that you dont have to come in today for work. Its the best I can do for right now with how bad this city has gotten. But you need your rest since with what today is. Id pay for a week vacation for you to go anywhere but we need you here, just in case something big goes down, over.
Thanks Chief, but next time, dont remind me about today, I havent had a good nights sleep in the past week, over.
Okay, Nate, say hi to your mother for me, will you, over?
I will, over, Car 43 out.
Station out.
Nathan reached across the steering wheel and shut off the cruiser, stuffed the keys into his pocket and walked back to his house. As he opened the front door, he could hear his phone ring from the kitchen. Not knowing how long it has been ringing, he sprinted for it, right before he was able to pick it up the answering machine started up.
Hey, this is Nathan Chase, sorry Im not home, Im either out with my friends or patrolling the streets. Please leave a message at the tone. BEEP!
Hey honey. Its Carmen. How are you? I just wanted to make sure you have been staying out of trouble. Dont forget about our date tonight. I cant believe your finally taking me out, I know with being on the force, its tough to get off but I have faith in you. Love you lots. Muah!
If things couldnt get worse, I forgot about my date with Carmen. How could I be such an air-head? He looked down and picked up a small black box next to the answering machine. Maybe I should propose tonight since it will be 2 years since weve been dating. He opened the box to reveal a diamond ring shimmering in the dim light in the room.
Nathan walked back up to his room to change into some street clothes since he had the day off. As he entered the living room, he grabbed the remote off the shelf just in the room and turned on the T.V. on. As he surfed the channels and found nothing on the T.V., Nathan threw the remote on the chair, headed back up to his room and flopped onto his bed. He shut his eyes as his darkness carried him away.

Chapter 2
The Unexpected Guest

Nathan woke up to the answering machine going off again. He glanced at the clock to find out what time it was, which read a quarter to twelve. Im glad I was able to have a few hours of dreamless sleep. He quickly slipped out of his bed and walked downstairs to check the answering machine.
