My Cousin Lois
Kate Kerrison

When you were a child did you ever have a favourite friend?

I did and mine was my cousin Lois. She was small and slim with long black hair and dark eyes, always on the go and full of fun. Next to her I always felt big and awkward and ungainly but next to my mum, dad and brother I loved her best in the world.

We grew up together, literally from the day we were born (she is six months older than me) until we were eighteen and she got married and I went to college.

Lois was cool because her mum and dad had a colour television and their house always seemed bigger than mine and both her mum and dad worked so they had a car each which was the height of luxury.

I was a huge fan of the famous five and for those of you over thirty will know exactly who I mean!
My cousin Lois and I would roam our local common or the woods and this was in the days when you could let your children loose in the countryside and as long as they were home before it got dark that was fine.

This was in the days before I pods and personal computers and play station and we would go out and play and use our imagination. Our favourite thing to do was to pretend to be the famous five and as there was only two us we had to play dual roles but drew the line at pretending to be Timmy the dog.
We would make up plays and act them out and some of our performances were Oscar winners! Move over Gwyneth Patrow, we were going to be stars.

My cousin Lois was a keen writer and used to write stories and poems and was very good and could also draw. I wasn't envious honest. Especially when she had a book published at the age of about twelve. But I did want to be like her.

Christmas was always great fun because we used to gang up together and she used to scare me to death with ghoulish horror stories, which she loved and I hated. Christmas day was spent as one huge family gathering and we would have great fun playing snakes and ladders, chequers and good naturedly come to blows playing monopoly and we used to have arguments as to who got the dog.

She also had a one eyed cat (sustained when he got run over) which was evil in a fur coat and a rabbit who was nothing like thumper in bambi, all cute and cuddly. It was enormous and had a tendency to bite one end and kick the other. The safest way to feed it was to open the cage door, throw in the food and slam the door shut.

Once we had grown up we lost touch for a few years and used to see each other at parties, weddings and funerals. Then about two months ago I was in my local supermarket and was wandering around when I saw this familiar figure loitering amongst the fruit and veg. It was my cousin Lois. We looked at each other for a moment not quite believing what we were seeing.

Once we started talking it was like I had only seen her couple of days previously. Lois may be a little bit older and perhaps not as lithe as she was when she was six but she was still the cousin of my youth and I remembered how next to my mum, dad and brother I loved her best in the world.
