Memoirs Of A Water Molecule
Richard Lynch
I have lived a full life in my hundreds of years;
I have run the whole range of emotions.
I've been newfallen snow and a child's shed tears,
and I've traveled among the four oceans.
My whole saga began with an oxygen man,
who befriended two hydrogen brothers.
They decided that water was part of the plan,
so they fused and I joined all the others.
My first gig was to live in a baptismal pool,
to bless children and make them feel better,
but then sitting around made me feel like a fool,
so I left in the sleeve of a sweater.
With my freedom, I found that the world was quite spry
and that I could have many a caper.
When the sweater got cleaned and was hung out to dry,
I transformed and became water vapor.
Well, the next thing I knew, I was caught in a storm
with loud thunder and bright bolts of lightning.
I then fell to the ground in a rainy new form.
The whole matter was terribly frightening.
There's another adventure, of which I'm quite fond;
I can still feel my memory swelling.
I was mired in mud in a bug-ridden pond,
and they started erecting a dwelling.
Humans dug a deep trench and then laid down some pipe.
We all pondered the strange operation,
and a bunch of the guys built it up with some hype.
I was taken with all the elation.
There was finally a chance to abandon the trap
that had held us for days upon days.
We rushed into the house through a fancy new tap
and we dropped into long, metal trays.
I had been ice before, in a Northeastern lake,
so I knew all about being frozen,
but these separate cubes were a twisted new take
and they're not something I would have chosen.
So I waited and prayed, knowing not what to think.
I was finally placed in a cup.
I was covered with liquid, a flavorful drink;
now my future was looking quite "up."
I look back on those days and the forms that I hit,
whether rain, river, steam, sleet, or snow,
and I know that until fission renders me split
I'll continue to go with the flow.
