Prologue
A white she bear gasped in horror as an arctic fox pinned her. A ginger kit wailed. "Iji!" Iji looked to the fiery creature, noticing his fluffy kit fur that would one day be a thick, sleek pelt, was spiked and bristling. She gasped at the young kit's bravery, and desperately cried, "Don't, Kiinaq!" It was hopeless. Kiinaq sprang forward and dealt the fox a small graze along it's back. The fox turned around clawing at Kiinaq's belly, and Iji took her chance. Slashing at the fox's throat, she got up explosively. The fox growled in shock as it's gaze went blank and it fell into the snow. The foxes gaped their jaws, exposing sharp white canines, and then pelted out the entrance, frantically scrambling and floundering in the loose snow. When all of them were gone, Iji comforted a grieving she bear. It had been the second time thes foxes had attacked, and it had reminded the mother of her cubs that were lost to her by the pack. "Imiq, your cubs are waiting for you in our ancestor's territory remember?" Imiq looked at Iji with despair clouding her sorrowful gaze, making the bears and Iji flinch. "I hope so."
Chapter 1
Fox scent and blood stained the icy, slippery dens. White tufts of fur stuck out from the cracks in the frozen snow and bears were licking there herb stained wounds. It had been a bloody, brutal battle, and many lost bears were lying limply in the clearing. "Nuna!" A cub's high pitched voice wailed. Tonrar ran to the side of the nursery and saw his sister, battered and dead, laying in the bright sunshine. Kiinaq sighed. "So many lost..." He thought. Sila's bruised, wounded body still lay by the seniors' den. Her jaws were still bared in a fierce snarl, but her once angry gaze was lifeless and dull. Graciana's gray, dusty remains were still spread out in the clearing for vigil, but the foxes had trampled over it, leaving it patch furred and stark outlined in the shimmering sunlight. Kiinaq thought about Auq and Uniuk, and Sivulliq and Mud. Kiinaq could tell his bears were feeling the same way. Could they journey to the mountains without losing another?
Chapter 2
Kiinaq was dreaming. He raced through the moor, his massive paws thumping the ground. The hollow echoes seemed to flow through his body and give him new strength. He dashed across the prairies for a moment longer as he transitioned smoothly into a forest biome. As he ran by, he heard the words, "Not everyone is as rebellious as me." Kiinaq recognized Mud as he flew past trees and dense scrub. He wanted to call out, to beg for his unlikely friend, but he stayed silent as he leapt over creeks and fallen logs. The humid scents of luscious foliage and thick, dewy vegetation drifted into his nostrils. Senses alert, muscles rippling, he sprang across a deep, dusty gorge as he landed in a tunnel network. "Be wary, but not afraid..." He remembered the old cat he met in Ivy Cave as he launched his body into the bright, harsh sunlight. The warmth seeped into his pelt, slithering trough his fur and soaking his cold skin within heartbeats. He felt the biome change from dark, endless tunnels to warm beach. He felt a ghostly presence by his side as he thundered along the calm waves. "Sacrifice is not easy, but necessary." Auq spoke when he splashed from the freezing sea into cold, icy tundra. A familiar aura entered his ears as a heartwarming voice whispered, "Be brave, Kiinaq. I am with you." Iji's murmur disappeared from memory as his dream ended, but the lesson was plastered in his heart forever.
Chapter 3
Kiinaq awoke briefly after his dream. He relished the cold sunlight on his back. It might be the last time he would ever feel it. He padded out of his den and saw other bears feasting on the remains of the prey brought back the day before. He settled down beside a plump, half eaten seal carcass and tore out strips of fatty flesh. Chewing up the succulent meat, he finished off the seal and clambered onto the Frosted Boulder, which was slick with ice. "Ice Tribe!" He hollered, waking up the rest of the bears and alerting the already awake ones. Kiinaq continued after all of his tribe began to share with each other. "We leave soon. We head for the mountains in the direction of the rising sun!" The bears let out cheers and growls of excitement. He roused the bears that finished eating, and eventually they headed out to face the sunshine. Kiinaq knew that they could make it, even if that meant sacrifice beyond imagination or strength further than normal limits. "We can do it!" He thought as he led his bears towards the rising sun.
Chapter 4
Sliding along the sea ice effortlessly, Kiinaq narrowed his eyes in frustration at the long stretch of churning, frothing dark water. Shadows were swarming below, and he didn't have to squint to realize they were killer whales. He sighed to his tribe. "We must swim." No bear other than him had seen the orca, so they seemed content. But then Ikima spoke up. "Tonrar is only a cub! He can't swim that far!" Kiinaq shook his head. "Wrong. Tonrar, come here." Tonrar gasped, and bounded forward, his paws firmly planted on the ice. He looked excited as Kiinaq spoke the ancient words of a changing ceremony. "Tonrar, is it your wish to become a true bear of this tribe, a strong part of hunting and fighting?" Tonrar nodded, his gaze hardening with determination. "It is." Kiinaq looked proud. "Then I hereby proclaim you a bear of our tribe. Ice tribe, let us welcome this new warrior!" "Tonrar! Tonrar!" The bears hanted over and over again, and at the corner of his eye, he noticed the roars of praise had scared the orca away. Iji was with him as she muttered, "A young one will rise to be the greatest of all." He growled happily to his tribe. "Very well. Tonrar, you are to train to be my successor!"
