Long Island University And The 2006 College World Series Winson Thai
June 8 marks the start of the 2006 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska and the Long Island Blackbirds have two new, but extraordinary closers, Ivan Chen for baseball and Sarah Gilbert for softball. They have been good friends for many years and played huge roles in their teams’ successful appearances in the tournament, the first time for softball and second time in three years for baseball, who won in 2004.
A hilarious incident happens to each LIU team in the first round. In the top of the fifth against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, Softball Coach Roy Kortmann is in his team’s dugout talking with the ESPN broadcasters when a very odd sound is heard. The LIU players look at Gilbert, who is standing next to her coach and admitted that she just passed gas. As a result, everyone who heard it starts laughing out loud. A really awful smell soon blankets the dugout and everybody inside is forced to run out. The game is paused for ten minutes while utility men spray the area with Lysol. Gilbert does not pitch in this match, which the Blackbirds lose 9-1, but they beat the Oklahoma Sooners 9-4 in their next game and move to Round Two.
A day after Gilbert’s mishap, the LIU baseball team begins its first World Series game against the Washington Huskies. The Blackbirds are up 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth, but Washington has the bases loaded with one out against Reliever Paul Lopez. Chen is bought up to face Jeff James, but a few mayflies arrive after he takes the mound. Their numbers multiply during the at-bat and by the time Chen strikes out James looking, they have overtaken the stadium and being more than a nuisance now, the umpires declare a halt to the game. The fans try their best to shield themselves from the flies while all of the players run to their respective team’s dugout, but Chen, not wanting to abandon his post, stays on the mound and covers his face with his glove. Coach Don Maines repeatedly orders Chen back to the bullpen, but he cannot hear him until he yells out loud, causing some fans to laugh. When play finally resumes 25 minutes later, Chen gets Kyle Conley to fly out to center to end the inning before pitching a perfect ninth to give LIU the win.
In Round Two, the Blackbirds baseball team faces the Sooners, who are seeking for revenge after their fellow softball team lost to the Blackbirds. LIU is up 7-6 in the top of the ninth, but Chen surrenders a game-tying home run to Cory Williamson to force extra innings, but he recovers from his blown save by pitching 2 2/3 shutout innings and earns the win when Eric Hinkle’s walk-off single in the eleventh gives the Blackbirds an 8-7 victory. Meanwhile, the LIU softball girls have a 3-0 lead against the Wichita State Shockers when Gilbert comes to pitch the top of the seventh. She runs into trouble when Wichita gets two runs and puts runners on first and third with two outs, but gets Hilary Fort to fly out to left field to end the game and propel her team to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, both she and Chen would falter in that round.
The softball team has a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh against the UCLA Bruins when with one gone, Andrea Duran triples off of Gilbert before Caitlin Benyi takes the 1-1 pitch high to center, tying the game and forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Brittany Murphy’s home run off of Lisa Dodd puts LIU back in front 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, Gilbert strikes out Krista Colburn swinging before walking Shane Stewart. Then Whitney Hom hits a fly ball to right field and it appears that Amanda Devan would make a catch for the second out, but she drops the ball, which lets Stewart reach second while Hom goes to first. UCLA has the winning run on base, but Gilbert gets Alissa Eno to pop up to shallow left and now the Blackbirds only need one more out to advance to the championship round. Sadly, they do not get the out as the next hitter, Danielle Peterson, doubles to center. Stewart scores the tying run and Hom beats Renae Beauchman’s throw to home to score the winning run for ULCA. They move on in the series while LIU suffers an embarrassing elimination due to Gilbert’s first career blown save and Devan’s costly error.
Chen performs even worse days later. With his team leading 6-2 in the bottom of the ninth against the OSU Cowboys, he gets two quick outs, but completely falls apart afterwards. First, Corey Brown goes deep to make it 6-3 LIU before Rafael Thomas gives Chen a scare by sending his 2-2 pitch right above his head. Then Chen walks Ryan Flavell on a full count before two straight RBI singles from Tyler Mach and Donnie Webb, the latter of whom was down in the count 1-2, cut LIU’s lead to 6-5. With men on first and second, Chen moves them up by throwing a wild pitch to Rebel Ridling, who then sends the next one over the center field fence for his second walk-off home run of the series. OSU wins 8-6 and another unusually poor performance by a star closer leads to the Blackbirds being eliminated from the early-summer classic.
LIU fans acclaim Chen and Gilbert for their overall series performances despite the losses and the two eventually begin dating, but other colleges make fun of them for what happened in Round One. In the final rounds, OSU and UCLA would lose respectively to the Oregon State Beavers and Arizona Wildcats.
