1. How Leaders Decided to Have Deputies.
It was a dark and stormy night when the moon disappeared. Starclan was upset. Suddenly, the screeches and hisses of war came from beyond the skies, on earth. Cats were growling and snarling and clawing and biting. The slashes of relentless fury only became more bloodthirsty as lightning began to fall from the sky. A lightning bolt, brighter and hotter than any of the others, struck a mighty oak and the rest of the four oaks at Fourtrees were crackling, dying in the flames of Starclan's anger. The flames seemed to swallow everything in it's path, and no matter what it consumed, the flames did not die down.
Cats shrank in their bloody pelts at the terrifying sight. "Starclan doesn't like this!" A cat whimpered from behind. It was Shypaw of Thunderclan. A dark furred cat hissed at her. "Quiet! I started this battle for a reason! Give us you territory, and we won't hurt you!" It was Shadowstar of Shadowclan. A brown tom stepped forward majestically. "Shadowstar, cats do not have claws for this reason. Let us put an end to this bloodshed!" He roared, louder than any crash of thunder. Shadowstar merely purred, an edge in her voice as she spoke. "Give us your territory, and we won't fight!" Her honeyed threat rang through the forest. Would anyone oppose her?
A wiry she-cat stepped forward. "Never!" She spat. A sleek light gray tom with watery dark gray stripes stepped forward. His eyes were misty and troubled. "Now Windstar, calm yourself. We are to stop this war immediately. Starclan has warned us." He dipped his head out of respect and gratitude for his kind and wise ancestors. But Windstar snapped a retort instead. "We need our territory! We are starving, but we don't fight with others for what rightfully belongs to them!" Low growls rumbled in the throats of the watching warriors. Skystar shook his head. "I refuse to battle anymore. Skyclan, we are going home." He turned with a flick of his bushy gray tail and leapt into the bushes. His warriors followed him. Shadowstar hissed angrily. "Cowards!" But Skystar only acknowledged it with a flick of his ear. Then they were gone.
The battle erupted again, and when Shadowstar's attention was turned to a mottled brown tom, a massive gray tom with river blue eyes sprang. He landed on the dark tom and sliced his belly open. Before Shadowstar could retaliate, the stone gray tom was behind him and had began to claw his spine. Shadowstar howled, "Graywing!" Graywing had advanced upon him, slashing and clawing the black leader's fluffy tail and wet muzzle. Soon Shadowstar fell, lying limply in the strewn mud. Graywing's attention to him changed course when he was pinned by a golden tom. Shadowstar was soon forgotten as Graywing raced to find another opponent. When the battle ended, Shadowstar's pelt was lit by a haunted moon. The cats of Shadowclan gave grief-stricken howls. But then the howls of grief were silenced with one question. "Who will be the new leader?"
Everybody stopped to think about what had been said. A ruffled ginger tom cried out. "Shadowclan is done for!" This sent volleys of shrill yowls splitting the moonhigh air. Suddenly Shypaw stepped forward. "What if... What if Shadowclan had a... Deputy?" Everyone stared at her as if she had grown two tails. Then Windstar spoke up. "What would a... A deputy be?" She asked uncertainly. Shypaw's eyes suddenly danced with brightness. "It... It could be a cat that does small but important things for the leader, and... And helps when the leader i-...is absent..." She was in deep thought as Riverstar padded toward her, looking pleased. "Good idea. And he or she could organize patrols and be the leader's successor, correct?" He muttered thoughtfully. Shypaw nodded eagerly. "Yeah! And the leader would chose who to be the deputy!" A silvery gray tom with eyes as blue as a sunhigh sky tipped his head to one side. "But what if it takes too long? And the leader is already... Dead." He whispered the last word silently. Then the clearing broke out into choruses and clatters. Who would find a good answer?
The clearing lapsed into silence as a white she-cat with ice blue eyes and a black tail tip padded forward. "Jaggedpeak, how about the deputy must be chosen before moonhigh? That would be reasonable and give us enough time here." She suggested. Thunderstar nodded. "Good idea, Hollypelt. But Shadowstar is already dead! How will choose the deputy?" Hollypelt looked worried. "Well... Someone who is brave, and kind..." Suddenly a voice spoke behind them. "Well then, Hollypelt, I believe you should be the new Shadowclan leader." Everyone turned around and saw the spirit of none other than Shadowstar. The black she-cat purred. "I have joined Starclan. My warrior ancestors have forgiven me for the battle tonight, and I have been allowed to name the new deputy. Hollystar, choose a deputy." Hollystar took in a deep breath and then jumped onto the Great Rock. "I say these words before the body of Shadowstar, so he may hear and approve my choice. Brindletail will be the new deputy of Shadowclan." "Brindletail! Brindletail!" The chant was taken up by all the cats in the clearing. "Brindletail! Brindletail!" Brindletail walked forward to the base of the cold boulder. "I... Will do the best for my clan. And... I accept." The cats cheered and hollered their praise as Brindletail gazed up at her shining ancestors. The stars were glowing brighter than ever before, and the rain from the battle had eased the fire. The four great oaks were growing back... And Starclan was pleased.
