Land Invasion Xie
Prologue
"Good job, Taqqiq!" A large male white bear was praising a silvery blue tom. Taqqiq puffed out his chest. "I knew I could catch a bison! Siqiniq helped, though." A fiery ginger she cat was shuffling her paws. "Well, I did chase it towards him..." Siqiniq muttered. The white bear smiled. "Then you both did very well. Let's drag this," he pawed the limp carcass, "back to the camp." "Alright, Auq." They replied. Auq hauled the bison along as Taqqiq and Siqiniq pushed from behind. As they made their way across the prairie, Auq thought he caught the faint scent of Kiinaq. "No." He shook his head. "It... It can't be."
Chapter 1
"Kiinaq!" Auq bellowed delightedly. He lumbered through the snow that shimmered in the bright starlight, stumbling past two sleeping cats, one silvery grayish blue, the other flaming ginger. "Auq! Robin! Droplet!" Kiinaq cried. The two cats woke up. "Kiinaq!" Robin raced along, outpacing Droplet. They stopped, panting, at Kiinaq's side. Droplet looked up, mischief in his leafy green eyes. "My name's Taqqiq now. Robin is Siqiniq." Kiinaq nodded. He glanced up at Auq. "Am I too late to teach them to hunt killer whales?" He joked. Auq shook his head merrily. "No, but I have taught them the basics of ice hunting. We focus mainly on land hunting, though." Kiinaq's eyes suddenly misted. "Wait a moment." He leapt onto the Frosted Stone. "Let the Ice Tribe gather!" His voice echoed, vibrating through the camp. Bears rumbled happy greetings as they sat down beneath the boulder. Kiinaq decided it was time to begin. "My tribe, I have returned, as all of you know." He added. "I have great news!" He continued. "Tomorrow, at dawn, we return to the ice!"
Chapter 2
There were growls of approval and excitement. Kiinaq rumbled happily. Finally, his tribe was going to battle the cold! "Hunting patrols!" He listed the names. "Imiq, Auq, Sila, go to the prairies and catch something there. Siku, Koko, swim to the nearest ice and hunt. We don't want to forget our white bear roots!" The bears he had instructed nodded. After he announced the scouting patrols, they rushed off, and then Kiinaq heard the worst words ever. "Dark Pack, attack!"
Chapter 3
Kiinaq was caught by surprise as a golden male dog shot out of the bushes, a pack of other white and black dogs thundering after him. They crashed through the camp barrier easily and fanned out behind the golden male, barking and snarling furiously. The golden dog stepped forward. "Kiinaq!" He addressed the huge male. "You may have thought you destroyed the Dark Pack, but think again." Taqqiq and Siqiniq looked horrified. "Kiinaq, you told us you killed them all!" They chorused. Kiinaq trembled, then held his ground. "I did. Are you an unofficial redemption of the pack?" He asked curiously, but had a bold tone in his question. The golden male nodded. "But not unofficial. Before you killed Shadow, she told me and several other dogs to hide. We did, and we are the remnants of the new pack. I may have commanded the Dark Pack to attack, but we are called the Thunder Pack, and I am Lightning."
Chapter 4
An elderly male gasped. His name was Uniuk, but he was so wise everyone referred to him as, "The Aput Uniuk". "I have heard of you!" He stuttered, shocked. "Your leader back in the day was... Frost, I believe. Back then, you attacked us and claimed to be the Ice Pack. Why do you change your names so often?" Lightning narrowed his mud brown eyes. "None of your business, you piece of walrus-dung!" The golden male twitched his tail, and the dogs poured forward like a dammed stream that had been unblocked. Kiinaq began giving orders. "Uniuk, Uumatik, Sivulliq, get back into the den! Tariuk, Auja, Ullariaq, Niaqu, Sigjaq, defend the seniors! Isuma, Ikuma, Ikima, Kissi, defend the cubs! Taqqiq, Siqiniq, Natiq, Anuri, Ulluq, Ukiuq, drive the dogs back! I will lead a patrol consisting of Maquk, Sauniq, Qaqqa, Ikaqraq, Ittuluk, and Ookpik to corner Lightning! Any remaining bears, fight to corner the dogs with the front patrol!" He knew even though the dogs understood bear language, they weren't fluent in it. His quick leading had left the pack confused, and they merely whined as Kiinaq's bears scurried hastily into tight formation. Kiinaq let out a fierce roar, and his patrol rushed forward. They chased Lightning away from his pack and cornered him farther away from the camp. Then a brilliant idea drifted into Kiinaq's mind.
Chapter 5
"Sauniq, Qaqqa, move so we can drive him into the water!" Sauniq and Qaqqa nodded. They sidestepped to reveal an exit. Lightning shambled ahead quickly in his fear to escape, and he realized it was a trap far too late. He fell into the water, and he flailed his legs in an effort to get back up. Kiinaq leapt, pounding down the slope. He put a paw on Lightning's chest. He began drowning the pack leader. Lightning gave a glare of pure hatred before his gaze was wiped blank by death. Kiinaq picked up the limp body and they raced back to the camp. The battle was still going on strong, but the dogs were faltering and the bears were driving them off. As Kiinaq lifted Lightning's body, which glistened in the pale moonlight, the dogs staggered. "Patrol, drive them through the entrance! Each of you, shove one dog through the tunnel until they all flee!" He mumbled around the golden pelt of Lightning. The patrol led by Taqqiq scooted to the side, and the bears that were by the entrance moved beside the front patrol. They heaved a dog back one by one, until the pack was gone. One dog with a pelt brown as an oak's bark stopped before retreating. "Don't think you've won. I am Tree, Lightning's second in command. The new pack will be the Forest Pack. We will come after you." And with that, Tree flicked his long, shaggy tail and disappeared into the night. Kiinaq heard a voice whisper. It was Iji's murmur once more. "What you did was for the good of our tribe."
