Kiinaq's Story Xie
Prologue
The eerie purple sky was lit by a whole moon. The bright green lights that housed their ancestors shone brightly above. A young she-bear stared at the stars. Suddenly she heard a weak mewl from behind her. She glanced over her shoulder to see a strong, fit male white bear carry a small bundle of wet ginger fur towards her. "What is that?" She asked absent-mindedly, angling her ears in the direction of the soaked pelt. The male polar bear dipped his head. "I am sorry for interrupting you." He began. "But I found this poor kitten floating in a crack in the ice. Iji, what do we do with it?" The she-bear, Iji, stared at it. Then a prophecy whistled through her ears. " Warmth will fight the cold." Then it was gone. She shook her head. "Take it to Imiq. She lost her cubs recently, as you know, Auq. She will have milk for her." Auq nodded. He turned and picked up the cold kitten. Dragging it along, he heaved it onto the iceberg that led to Frozen Island, their home. Iji pondered for a moment. "Warmth will battle the cold... Is the kit the warmth?"
Chapter 1
"Kiinaq, Iji wants to see you." Kiinaq acknowledged Auq's words with a twitch of his long tail. His ginger pelt shone in the half light of the snow den, and his broad shoulders were planted firmly, his muscles rippling beneath his shaggy pelt. He leapt into the open. His eyes adjusted to the dazzling brightness of the sun shining upon the snow faster than he expected. He raced to Iji's den, his huge, massive paws skimming the snowy surface of the cold stone. A freezing wind had brought a cold blizzard that snowed the tribe in. Kiinaq burst into the frosted cave that was Iji's den. It was called, "The Ice Cavern". Kiinaq's stared at Iji. The white she-bear had a gray muzzle, and it was starting to become darker along the rest of her body. Iji's eyes glowed and twinkled joyfully at me. "Kiinaq, you are my successor, as you know. But what you don't know, is that you're not a bear." Those last words shook Kiinaq fiercely. "What?" He stretched the word long and felt himself stutter. "What?" He repeated, slower than before. Iji growled happily in response. "Yes. You are a cat. A strong one, being nursed on polar bear milk, which is nine times richer than cat milk. That is how you thrived. I will now tell you the tale of how you became a strong, happy part of our tribe."
Chapter 2
"You were a tiny ginger kit when Auq found you." Iji rasped roughly. "You were found drifting in a crack in the ice when Auq went hunting with Sila and Koko. He was about to cross the ice when... When he saw you." She emphasized her last word strongly. "You were wet, cold, and unconscious. We managed to save you by licking your fur and warming you with Imiq's milk. She recently lost both her two cubs, Siku and Uumatik, to a starving pack of arctic foxes. Her mate, Auq, was eager to take you in. But she wasn't. At first, she saw you as a replacement for her lost cubs." Her voice was shaking. Everybody knew she was growing older. Kiinaq was greatly shocked by the news, but he gathered his wits and move forward to stop her. "Shhhh. Don't try to talk." Iji's ears twitched with amusement. "I may be old, but I still have a few good fights in me yet!" She licked my muzzle gently and comfortingly. "But soon, everyone came to accept you, even Imiq, even though she was hesitant a at first. You grew and became a great hunter and fighter. I always believed in you. You were my battle patrol leader and my hunting patrol leader. You have a prophecy." She was gasping for breath now. "The warmth will fight the cold. The blizzard! It is still raging on outside. You will fight it by leading my... Your tribe well." She inhaled sharply. "Take care, Kiinaq... The Siqiniq are with you... As am I." Then her eyelids closed forever. Kiinaq held back a wail of grief. It was time to go to the Pool of the Siqiniq.
