Howling Dog
D G Williford

Howling dogs and crackling crickets
Sounds neath my windowpane

Looking out the window fore me
feel the freedom at last

heart of wisdom is smoked away
flightless air captures me

escaping into air they fly
bubbles of air they eat

tendons stretching for the sunshine
feeling life not far from me

Must and dust a nod away from
the windmill - flashing turning - bright

spinning swirling always away
Wine drops dusty apron

whipser of love from outer doors
musty lamplights candle drips

Dreams of love and live - nevermore
tremble grasp no escape

Am I alive or not I ask?
What would you think - take my flask?

In the shadows of light and dark
Will you guess what you are?
