Hick Life L Chapman
I know you dont care about what I say
But I am a unique person and I do everything my way
I know I'm not that smart, and not too pretty
I am a hick from KY, not a sophisticated poet from a big city
My clothes are all raggy, my hair is bleach blonde
I refer to swimming pools as cement ponds
I live in a tralier that rests on concrete blocks
I go around bare foot cause I cant afford to buy shoes and socks
I do most of my shopping at the general dollar store
hey just because I shop there, dont mean I'm poor
my family has drawn food stamps since i can remember
Santa Claus never made a stop at our house in december
the kids in my class used to make fun of me and laugh
cause i never paid full price for my lunch, i could only pay half

"I liked this poem. I'm a black girl originally from OH and I grew up on welfare. Everybody blamed our poverty on white people, which never made sense to me sense my white friends were poor and on welfare too. If I spoke about this, sometimes I would get a smack in the head. I'm happy you wrote this, it proves that everyone, no matter what their color or ethnicity, can experience poverty." -- E.D. Traynum, Atlanta, GA.
