Flourescent Lighting
Hayley Burdett

I sat at the table, the plastic table cloth made my arms sweat against it. The fan had ceased working years ago. One day the blades just stopped rotating and the merry-go-round whirling and spinning ended. Since then, the kitchen has always been the hottest room in the house, but not much better than the suffocating attic. Every time you went up there, you had to choke on the musty smell of mothballs until your lungs adjusted to your adventure on the third story.
I stared at the checkerboard table cloth Mother had always been so fond of. It gave me such a dizzy headache that my head began to spin like the fan used to. I glanced over at the bunch of bananas that I had bought at the grocery store the day before. One was shriveled, dying, rotting in the fluorescent lighting of the kitchen. Another banana was just starting to ripen, green and vivacious in its youth. It looked as though it might sing, thriving in the heat.
Mother came into the kitchen in her stocking feet. Ever since her Alzheimers had gotten worse, she would wander in, shuffling her feet on the laminated floor.
Mommy, she cooed, not realizing that she was the mommy. I want some juice.
I pushed myself from the chair, thinking of how much we are like the bananas. Her wrinkled and graying complexion looked so much like the dying banana. And I was the opposite my hands were smooth in my young age. How quickly she too was rotting beneath the fluorescent light.
I poured her grapefruit juice in a plastic cup and gingerly handed it to her.
Drink up, Mommy, I said lowly, so that she couldnt hear me.

"I loved the banana usage...the imagery was very strong because of the banana. This is written with a sheer rawness...a acrid taste to it. Well done." -- e.rocco caldwell.
