Epitaph
Arthur Henry Isaacson

When from this world I take my leave
When from your sight Iíve gone
What will be the mark Iíve left?
That survives my moving on

There are no books that hold my words
My wisdomís not enshrined
No monuments of stone or steel
My essence has defined

No signs to show the dreams I had
This traveler on his way
Or of the time Iíve wasted though,
I knew I couldnít stay

What will be my sum of breath?
My work and yes, my play
What will remain of permanence?
To show I passed this way

What difference have I made by living?
By using time and space
Where in this vast eternal stream
Will I find my proper place?

How much of me will time preserve?
What memories will remain?
Who will I be when you recall?
Or will you try, in vain?

When you are all around my grave
This life for me then ended
When in my ship about to sail
Into earthís care Iím tendered

Remember please that once I lived
And loved and cared and played
And each of you I carry on
Though to my rest Iím laid
