Driven Out Xie
"My kits..." A gray she cat murmured. She was staring at two bundles of fur. One was small, with a ginger pelt, and squeaked when it was touched. The other, slightly larger and blueish gray, merely rolled over when interacting with another life form. The gray she cat flinched as she saw a flashback. A ginger kit was rolling along, being carried far and fast by a stormy stream. She shuddered. "I'll never let that happen to you." She whispered to her kits.
Chapter 1
Kiinaq was mesmerized. A glowing birch, the Moon Tree, was towering above him. He shook his head, then turned and headed back to the cave. Thrusting his large head into the cavern opening, his wide eyes scanned the small space for the kits. He sighed with relief as he spotted them cowering beneath Azalea's belly. Azalea rose to meet me. She licked down a spiky tuft of fur on my head. "I'm proud." She purred happily. I gave a joyful rumble. "Thanks." I spun around in shock as I heard a tree snap. I watched, horrified, as I saw humans cutting down a tree. It creaked, then fell towards the cave entrance. I growled as the humans stared, uncaring of us as it toppled down. It blocked the entrance. Through a crack I saw the humans turn and leave. I snarled. "How could they!" Leopard hissed behind me, his amber eyes glinting dangerously in the darkness. I planted my massive paws firmly, putting my broad shoulder against the fallen log. I heaved, grunting as it shifted. I gave one last shove, then relaxed as the log rolled away. I ran out the entrance, heading for the Moon Tree. It glistened as I reached it. Would it help us?
Chapter 2
A storm was brewing above my white pelt. I looked up as thunder exploded. "The Celestial Storm." A voice whispered. It was Iji. I was reassured. Maybe I could escape it. I whirled around ready to run when I heard lightning strike, and the crackle of flames behind me. I glanced over my shoulder to see fire, and a blackened trunk where the Moon Tree used to be. I gasped, but it was too late. I raced through the forest, crashing through snaking vegetation and mud. I shot through the opening of the tunnel. I noticed the shocked look on Azalea's face as I threw the kits on my shoulder. "Get out! The Celestial Storm has caused a fire!" Flash and Leopard didn't hesitate to grab Azalea's scruff and haul her out. Kiinaq stumbled through the blazing debris, screwing up his teary eyes. He let out a mighty bellow. "Here!" He angled his ears towards a sycamore that had escaped the fire. Kiinaq clambered up, ignoring the flames that licked at his hindpaws. He made it to the top, panting. His white fur was turning black from the ashes but Kiinaq knew it was no big matter. He realized Azalea and the rest of them were behind him. Kiinaq took in a deep breath to calm himself. "This is it." He thought.
Chapter 3
Kiinaq took a huge leap. His massive stride took him far. He landed on the ground below. He looked up at Azalea. She replaced her worried glance with a glare of determination. She threw herself at the earth, plummeting down. She landed lightly, ready to run. Kiinaq nodded, and they shot off. He heard the pounding of pawsteps behind him and found himself sprinting along with Flash, Leopard and Azalea. The kits let out a squeal of delight. Kiinaq and the group rocketed down a steep slope. Taking advantage of his paw padding, he griped the slippery tussocks and jumped forward. He landed in a river and began to swim. Leopard didn't stop to wonder if upheld could swim or not. He pulled Azalea onto his back and began to float along the eddies. A splash of water sent them bobbing dangerously close to a waterfall as Flash dove into the stream. Kiinaq emerged on the other side. Leopard, Azalea, and Flash clambered out behind him. Kiinaq gave a big sniff. Smoke and ashes were only a distant memory, and he detected them far, far from where they were. He wondered what challenges the future held for them.
