Don't Look At Me

I stand before the mirror,
Turning away I cloak myself in the dark,
damp shroud I have created for me.
I cannot bear the image
that looks back at me from the glass.
How dare I dream,
of anything better than what I have made for me here.
It is what it is,
and I am just exactly what I am.
No need to put on the mask,
bow to knee, turn my face away...don’t look at me.
The mirror always betrays,
the words that scar my heart
and the acts that have devoured my soul.
Innocence lost so long ago
secrets that cannot be exposed, the ugly thing that is me.
I tried and I failed,
and I watch it blow away like ashes
blown into the vast wastelands of time.
No need to don the mask,
You know what I am...don’t look at me.
The warped and wrinkled hands of time,
turn forever exposing each ugly thing in me.
It is just what it is,
and I am just what I have always been.
The words hissed long ago,
in an ear that that did not understand then.
I have no mask that can hide,
all the things I try to hide...don’t look at me.
