Dance Of Death
David B Doc Byron

In death's stern realm there is no disassembling.
The false faces of good are clad in the bloody
masks of their own treachery.
But, the hearts of those who loved and lost which
broken hearts try to keep remembering, get lost
in the world of their own guilty wretchedness.

Crimes of the heart in it's own violence, can
create dark worlds of uncomfortable silence.
As the opressed one sits alone, crying themselves
to sleep at night, the opressor smiles, knowing
that they keep their intended lover in fright.
But the pompous fool who in life thought they
held a high place,
can be removed from their throne by the one who
seemed to hold no time and place.

The dance of the dead is a complicated one.

It consists of disembodied feet moving in
airy patterns,
such as the wind makes with dead leaves being
blown into a corner of some dark, lonely space.
The music? It is the sound of eerie, ghostly
laughter.
The dance floor? An old marble slab once deeply
carved with a young beauty's name.
The stage? the cold ground underneath an old
olive tree, the rotten, barren branches jutting
out over the scene, casting shadows resembling
skeletal arms on the ground in the moonlight.

The young lover approaches the cold slab, he
sees the broken hearted and lost soul rise up
from her moldy, worm infested tomb among the tall
sheets of dead grass.
The moon is full and fat, the stars above glowing
like unearthly, burning embers, golden, beautiful,
yet eerie.

As she rises from her resting place, he sees
the dead grass at her feet suddenly changes, turns
a rich, green color and the dead grass disappears.
She wears a ball gown like Cinderella; tiny dancing
slippers on her tiny feet, a mist of fog
surrounding them and moving upward.
Her skin is pale, ghostlike. Her once emerald
green eyes now coal black, lifeless, like a doll's
eyes. She appears dead.

The young man who had broken her heart,
stolen her soul, stood staring at this apparition
motionless, breathless.
He knew he was staring at a ghost.
''Come to me, my love,'' she says, ''and let me
hold you close one more time.''
He didnt resist; he let her arms engulf him, and
he felt a chill as cold and icy as the one she
must have felt when he had betrayed her.
Am I to lay alone in my cold and lonely tomb
forever alone? she thought.
No, I think not.

As her cold arms engulfed him, he smelled
her; a decaying smell, a dead smell, but, yet,
pleasing to the senses.
A faint hint of nightshade, wild graveyard
flowers that only bloom in lonely darkness,
moonlight.
Then he felt the faint prickling sensation in
his throat; as she sunk her long, sharp canines
into his jugular, his life giving blood being
drained from his weakening body.

As he felt himself fading away into the
darkness he knew he would never return from,
he felt her wrap her arms around him even tighter,
and began to move his dying body back and forth,
left to right, like a macabre marionette, yes...
they were dancing....slow dancing to the music
of the grave.....

In the final steps of the dance of death,
he managed to let out a blood curdling scream,
which quickly died out in the form of a ghostly
echo in the vast cold realm surrounding him.

He realized then that the dance of death wasnt
meant for just one; it was meant for two.

His final scream fell on deaf, and dead ears.
