Prologue
"We're leaving?!" A cub wailed. His mother rushed forward to coax him back into his nest. A white male looked furious. He bellowed at a ginger tom. "Kiinaq! We can't leave!" An elderly male nodded tersely. "Auq is right. Our ancestors have lived here for generations!" Kiinaq sighed unhappily. "I heed your worries, Uniuk, but the snow is freezing over. We must leave before we become frost-furred!" Auq rested his head on his paws. "Very well." A graying she bear shook her head. "I'm too old. May our ancestors light your path." Uniuk gaped. "No! I will help you!" He scurried over to her and put his head on her shoulder. "Don't leave us, Graciana!" Graciana rumbled happily, then coughed. "My bones are too ancient for such a journey. I will miss you, Uniuk." Uniuk blinked at her sorrowfully, and they nuzzled one last time. The other bears had already turned to leave. "Goodbye! And take care!" Graciana called. "And take care of... Of our cubs." She pointed her muzzle at Auq and Sila. Uniuk rasped a happy reply. "I will wait for you forever."
Chapter 1
Kiinaq turned to his ragged tribe. Auq's blood matted pelt neared bits of torn fur and bites, Sila had a nasty bite on her flank and a long gnash down her side, Siku's muzzle was scratched, and Koko had fur missing from her haunches and hindquarters. Kiinaq growled determinedly. "Today we have beaten the Forest Pack. Our ancestors wish us luck and proclaim our journey the right thing. Tonight we feast, and tomorrow, we leave!" His tribe cheered before returning to normal duties, waiting for the hunters to return. Kiinaq twitched his ear as he heard pawsteps behind him. "Ice Tribe, attack!" Bundles of thick white fur barreled into him. He batted at soft furred cubs as he futilely defended himself. He chuckled, before standing up. The kits squealed as he stomped back to the cub den. He ducked into the roots of the oak and stood up. He grabbed the cubs by the scruff and plunked them down by their mother, Ikima. She nestled her cubs into the curve if her belly, where they began suckling, before facing Kiinaq. "I'm sorry if Tonrar and Nuna bothered you. When they play, you can't stop them!" Kiinaq gave her a reassuring but amused look. "Cubs will be cubs." He replied joyfully. Heading out of the den, he saw the hunting patrols return. They were carrying many bodies. He leaned out to look closer. Was it prey?
Chapter 2
Kiinaq greeted the patrols curtly as he examined the prey. He growled approvingly. "Good job." He raised his praising voice. "Tribe, we will feast!" Bears and cubs padded over to grab a bison, a hare, a ptarmigan, a seal, a beluga whale, or a killer whale to share with friends and family and settled down in the sunset shade. Beautiful hues of russet and rose pink stained the mercury deep sea blue sky as the sun lit up the rippling waves. The senior bears groomed each other and talked casually as if the battle never happened, the younger bears boasted about how they fought the dogs, the nursing bears spoke about their cubs and the dangers for them to trek to back to the sea ice, and cubs tussled around in the sand, showering it over themselves and their prey before being scolded by their mothers. Kiinaq let pride flicker in his gaze for a moment, proud of his strong tribe, before his eyes misted, haunted and anxious. What danger did the Forest Pack appose?
Chapter 3
Kiinaq yawned as he woke up. Dawn had arrived and the dark night sky was already lighting up with a vivid aqua vibe. The puffy frost white clouds swirled together, dappling the atmosphere above. Kiinaq let out a roar, and the bears began waking up. Bears stumbled sleepily out of their dens, then saw Kiinaq and snapped back to attention. As the bears roused, Kiinaq began. "Today is a day to forever be passed down through the mighty generations of our enduring tribe!" The bears didn't react as he continued. "We will prevail, slipping through the tall trees, gliding effortlessly through the dark water, sliding along the ice, back to our home!" The bears let out barks of agreement. Once everyone was gathered and ready, he led them toward the rising sun.
Chapter 4
After launching himself into the water, Kiinaq pumped his legs carelessly through the salty water. It lapped at his fur, but he ignored it. He risked a glance over his shoulder, and saw a large black fin rising through the deep water. He gasped, horrified. "Orca! Get to the ice!" The bears didn't hesitate to kick out strongly. Kiinaq whirled around in the water. He glared at the black bulk sliding through the waves. Kiinaq turned around with a splash and swam faster than ever. He felt the orca's presence near his hindpaws, and he felt jaws gaping, hot breath on his hindquarters. With one last pant, he tossed himself onto the looming iceberg in front of him. His eyes closed as Auq lumbered towards him.
Chapter 5
His eyes flickered open. He groaned, but heaved himself to his paws. He stared out over the ice. His bears gazed at him with shock, but relief. He shook his broad head and fluffing out his wet pelt, they slid along the ice. Soon the sun dropped down, but they continued. After a while, Sivulliq collapsed. "I can't make it. Go on without me." Uniuk's eyes were wide and scared. "No! I lost Graciana, I can't lose you, too!" He begged, pleaded, and clung to Sivulliq's side until morning. Bears were emerging from the ice dens they created as they waited, and finally, Uniuk broke. "He's going away. Everyone is abandoning me. No one loves me... No one." Kiinaq licked him under the chin. "Everyone cares for you, Uniuk. Please don't leave us. What about the promise to Graciana? Will you look after your cubs?" Uniuk's eyes glazed, but hardened with determination. "No. I promised, and I will make sure they live." Unique didn't blink as they turned and left.
Chapter 6
As Kiinaq licked seal blood off his muzzle, he stared out over the ice. The mound was closer then it had been two suns ago. As his tribe moved forward, he squinted to see shapes lying on the snowy slope. They surrounded the mound and looked out vigilantly. Kiinaq hissed and, slowly getting his cat body back, -surprisingly- raised his tail, holding it erect. The bears stopped behind him, and then he hooked his tail. The bears looked ahead of him, and were most likely shocked to see the Forest Pack surrounding their home. The dens were smashed, and in the middle lay a ragged, graying she bear. "Graciana!" Uniuk cried. Kiinaq put his tail tip to the senior's muzzle and after that he put his tail down, sweeping from side to side. The bears spread out, and Kiinaq flattened his tail. Crouching down with his tribe, he rippled his tail. They slowly shuffled forward, and when they got close enough, he flicked his tail tip to the other side, and the bears launched themselves into battle.
Chapter 7
Tree spun around at a bobbing tail from a tan and black dog to see the bears thundering forward. He let out a screech and his pack plummeted down the slope. As the bears and dogs met mid-pounce, they fell into a locked bundle of fur and legs. Kiinaq ran up to Tree. "Stop! This place belongs to the Ice Tribe!" Everyone froze at Kiinaq's roar of fury. Tree held a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Wrong. And I hope you like bear meat, because were going to have some. One fresh killed bear, newly caught!" Suddenly, the tan and black dog leapt onto Kiinaq. Kiinaq bellowed in frustration at the dog, clawing at it. The tan male clung on, though, and the battle resumed. As they rolled over and over, Kiinaq and the tan dog fell into a seal hole. "Mud!" Tree snarled, flabbergasted. Kiinaq and Mud descended lower, sinking away from sight.
